Progressive HDTV

HI, do you know how to easily test whether a certain STB gives to the monitor which is linked 1080i or 1080p?
Using a 1080i -> 1080p converter, is this a good idea to enter to a monitor? It seems most of them don't like interlaced.
I need to assure i have 1080p.
