REVIEW: Samsung 2493HM Part 7
The selection in the sub-point Gamma is sparse. There are only three pre-defined modes which cannot be extended further. In the factory modes, "Mode 1" was selected. Let us say in advance that none of the three modes offered allows for a gamma value of 2.2.
Extremely small range of gamma settings in the OSD menu "Gamma".
In the third main sub-point of the OSD under the heading „Image" are the image improvement settings for a monitor that is connected via analogue. The top two menu options, "Coarse" and "Fine" should remove noise and possible stripes, "Sharpness" is self-explanatory and under this is an option for correcting the image position in "Horizontal" and "Vertical".
The Image option opens a wide range of setting options for a device which is connected via analogue.
The menu sub-option "OSD" is used to determine the language, length, transparency and display duration for the OSD itself. The display duration can be changed to one of a few set values: 5 s, 10 s, 20 s and 200 s.
The OSD for the OSD. Everything important is included.
This option establishes fundamental behaviour of the monitor. "Reset" is used to restore the monitor to its factory settings. The functions of the freely definable buttons can be selected using the "Customized Key" option. The off-timer establishes when the monitor shuts itself down. The user can select values between one and 23 hours in steps of one hour each. With "Auto Source", the automatic input signal selection can be switched to manual. According to the manual, "Image Size" should contain a setting which determines whether a signal which is not in widescreen format is stretched to the full width of the screen or not.
The fundamental behaviour of the screen is determined in the Setup menu.
The following explanations can be found in the manual on this subject: You can change the size of the window displayed on your monitor. Normal – the screen display follows in accordance with the respective input signal. Wide – the screen display follows as full screen, independently of the respective input signal.
When the monitor is connected digitally to the PC, however, the OSD refuses the user access to this function at a resolution of 1.920 x 1.200 pixels with the message "not available". At a selected resolution of 1.600 x 1.200 pixels, the option is also unavailable, and this is also the case at most other possible resolutions, where the image is stretched to the full width.
Only at 1.280 x 1.024 pixels does the monitor switch automatically to the mode for the correct aspect ratio, releasing the menu option. At 1.600 x 1.200 pixels, it would be desirable if the resolution could be displayed in a pixel accurate manner, which unfortunately is not the case. When the monitor is connected via analogue, justified display functions. This is also pre-defined and can be deactivated.
Since the option "Setup" contains so many sub-points, two menu options are located on a second page.
