REVIEW: Samsung 2493HM Part 8
With the AV mode function, the image should be displayed in optimal quality with regard to the screen size if a video signal is played over the HDMI or DVI connection at 480P, 576P, 720P, 1080i or 1080P. In plain talk this means that the monitor has an overscan mode. For PC usage, this function should be deactivated, which it is as standard for DVI connection.
HDMI black value should balance any possible disimprovements in the image caused by changes in the black value, the contrast or by the appearance of colour errors when a DVD player or set-top box is connected.
Still the Setup menu option, this time the second page.
The set-up of the configurable buttons is restricted to the four points displayed in the OSD: Video modes, colour settings, colour effects and image size. The most sensible selection is the factory settings, since the user can easily change between a pleasant level of brightness, which is ideal for working, and a higher level, which is pleasant for viewing films. However, the image is then set up within the scope of the factory settings. More than a "Custom Mode" would be a nice addition here for ambitious users.
The user-defined button can be set up in the OSD using the sub-option "Customized Key".
The last option in the OSD is the information window, which displays the active connection, lines and refresh rate as well as the current resolution.
An information screen with resolution and refresh rate is also integrated.
If the volume button is pushed directly, so without opening the OSD in advance, a simple volume bar appears which can be adjusted to values of 0 to 100 in steps of 1.
The current volume of the integrated speakers is displayed on the screen.
Otherwise, the recognised position of the display is blended into the middle in pivot position. The user-defined button displays the assigned OSD sub-menu on the bottom left of the screen, independently of the selected OSD position.
If no signal is incoming or a high-frequency signal is incoming, an appropriate message is displayed on the screen.
Overall, the OSD is very well-structured and easy to use. However, the automatic scaling of the image content to the full screen size should be revised and made deactivatable for all resolutions. At least display in the correct aspect ratio should be selectable for all resolutions when the monitor is connected digitally.
The capacitative buttons respond very well. Unfortunately, with every touch, the user leaves fingerprints on the high-gloss frame and when too much pressure is applied, the monitor wobbles a little. In darkness, use of the buttons is impossible – here, illuminated sensor buttons would be of help.
