Introduction

The Pro series from ViewSonic, which is designed "for absolute professionals" according to the manufacturer, is being headed by the 25.5-inch VP2650wb. This monitor is reported to cover 110 percent of the large NTSC colour space and offer excellent colour precision accordingly. However, that is not all: ViewSonic has equipped the model with a static contrast of 1,000:1 which extends to 4,000:1 and a response time of a fast three milliseconds. This should make the monitor ideal for use as a multimedia model in the HD sector and as a games monitor.

Thus, the VP2650wb is an all-rounder which is described as the "perfect choice for graphics designers, film productions and ambitious gamers" by the manufacturer.

In the midst of all this praise, ViewSonic forgets to mention the integrated 6-bit TN panel in the data sheets and prefers the general indication "Active colour matrix LCD display". The panel type can only be found in an overview about the VP series.

The abilities announced for the monitor are more than remarkable, but this model will also have to go through our test run and show what it can really do.

We tested the monitor in PC mode using a Sparkle GeForce 8800GTS 512 (G92); video playback was tested both using a PC via DVI and using a PS3 via HDMI cable connection. In addition, for the analogue D-Sub connection, an IBM T42p laptop with a FireGL/T2 graphics card was used. In addition a Gretag Macbeth EyeOne Display 2 colorimeter was used together with the iColor Display 3.0.5 software for the measurements.

Scope of supply

When the VP2650wb arrives, it is completely mounted in a large box and is surrounded by generous amounts of styrofoam. This guarantees secure transport. The cables provided are intact so that each input on the monitor can be used. The cables provided include a DVI-D single-link cable, D-Sub HD15, USB-A to USB-B and power cable.

In addition, a type of manual is included, but this is merely a multilingual Quick Start Guide, which explains the best order connectors and suggests installing the wizard what is contained on the CD.

Finally, there is a folded sheet which lists the native resolution of the monitor and gives a recommendation for cleaning the screen. According to ViewSonic, the panel surface should only be cleaned with water and a soft cloth.

The scope of supply includes everything you need for using the monitor. A manual, folding sheet, driver CD with software and cables for all connectors which the monitor offers.

At the front of the monitor, a stiff clear sheet is stuck on with a few adhesive strips to protect the panel during transit. In order to ensure that the monitor fits into the carton, the base is fixed in a low position using a transport security switch which must then be removed only when the monitor is unpacked.
