However, unfortunately, the overall impression is still not perfect: the vertical viewing angle represents a problem. If you are sitting in too high or low a position, the 3D impression is lost, since both images merge into each other. The ideal view is only possible within a very limited angle - and even at this angle, both images mix slightly into each other. Since the viewing angle on the monitor is not the same at each point, this is especially noticeable in the top and bottom sections. A larger distance from the screen softens this effect.

Another disadvantage is the extremely high power consumption of the model’s 3D mode. On average, the performance nosedives by about 50 to 60 percent, although in theory the same number of pixels are rendered. A powerful graphics card is thus a necessity for three-dimensional display. The "Tridef" software is, however, a solution in times of need: if the performance is no longer sufficient, the user can change between two quality levels for the 3D effect.

DVD and Video

In this section, we will examine only the computer as a player device. We will look at external video sources in detail in the next section.

Naturally, the W220S also accepts HDCP-encrypted material via its HDMI input. As a result, high-resolution material in Blu-rays can be played back without difficulty.

In films, the W220S demonstrates very good image quality. The contrast is sufficiently high for differentiated playback of bright and dark scenes. The bright patches which are especially noticeable in 16:9 or 2.35:1 format scenes because of the aspect ratio of the W220S are once again visible in a negative light here. In addition, the colours are somewhat harsh because of the extended colour space. Green and red hues therefore look somewhat over-saturated. However, this remains limited in films.

The streaking was also slightly visible in films, but overall, it was not as noticeable as in games.

Video signal processing

We could not find any indications of the electronics used in the manual or on the manufacturer’s website. According to the manual, however, frequencies of 56 to 75 Hertz can be displayed at various resolutions. The Hyundai W220S is expressly not a 120 Hertz monitor, which means that such a frequency can of course not be displayed. In the following procedure, we tested to what extent the Hyundai W220S is suitable for the playback of external sources other than the PC as a video processor.

Supported refresh rates

Below, we tested what frequencies the W220S supports. Frequencies of 50 Hertz or a multiple of 24 are especially helpful in allowing for judder-free display of videos or films. In order to check whether or not the monitor also functions internally with these frequencies, we carried out a judder test. Judder test on the Hyundai W220S.

In our test, we were able to prove judder-free playback of 60, 70, 72 and 75 Hertz. It was not possible to play back 56-Hertz. The W220S also accepted 50-Hertz material, but minimal juddering disturbed playback. It was not possible for the model to accept 24p material, such as that which appears on Blu-rays.
