REVIEW: Hyundai W220S Part 13The Hyundai W220S is capable of accepting half-frame based source material. However, an LCD always functions on a full frame basis. As a result, a function must be present which takes on the transformation of half frames to full frames, which is known as a deinterlacer. Further information can be found in our report: "Make 1 from 2" – deinterlacing.
2:2 signals are not recognised on the W220S and are upscaled by field scaling …

… and real video material. Like most monitors, which – unlike televisions – are not specialised in the playback of half-frame based material, the W220S also scales relevant material using simple field scaling only. However, the fact that the model also accepts 576i and 480i material is another positive aspect. Thus, double scaling is not carried out, which inevitably brings about a loss of quality. Nonetheless, we recommend that you play back progressive material for ideal display.
Advertisement The requirements for the scaling of video material are comparable with those for video games in many areas. The series of test images is based on an anamorphic video with circles, which should be absolutely round if the aspect ratio is observed correctly. The W220S has additional scaling options via its HDMI input. Thus, it is possible to display an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 4:3:
Playback in 576p in output format 16:9; Left: Interpolation full screen; Right: Interpolation 16:9. Since the material provided is in 16:9, the original aspect ratio is incorrect when the image is stretched to full screen. Here, 16:9 interpolation via the monitor, which inserts black borders at the top and bottom, can help. However, at this point, justified playback does not work and the material is reduced to an aspect ratio of 4:3, which causes it to be compressed strongly.
Playback in 576p in output format "4:3 Letterboxed"; Left: Interpolation full screen; Right: Interpolation 4:3. Alternatively, the player can insert black borders above and below the material. 4:3 display captures the material correctly. Thus, it is possible to display the circles in justified format.
