REVIEW: Hyundai W220S Part 14

Interpolation 1:1; Left: Playback in 576p in output format 16:9; Right: Playback in 576p in output format "4:3 Letterboxed".

The last scaling option offered by the W220S is 1:1 display. Unfortunately, justified playback fails, both in 16:9 and letterboxed playback. For 16:9 playback, the aspect is once again misinterpreted as 4:3, whilst for letterboxed playback, the pixel aspect ratio, which is not square, is not recognised or played back correctly.

Apart from the modes pictured, the W220S offers two overscan modes, which truncate the material slightly at the sides.

Colour models and HDMI black level

The adjustment of the video level is also very important for the correct display of the material. Adjustment problems can cause strong clipping in brighter and darker colours here or may give rise to a lifeless image with a reduced range of hues and no full black or white.

The W220S is flexible on its HDMI input. As well as the typical RGB model (4:4:4), it also accepts YCbCr (4:4:4 and 4:2:2). Digital media such as DVDs, Blu-rays, HD-DVDs and DVB signals, on the other hand, function using 4:2:0.

For playback of RGB (for example, from a console or a computer), the Hyundai W220S expects PC levels (value range of 0-255 per channel), and on the other hand, video levels are expected for YCbCr (value range 16-235 per channel). For use of the HDMI input, this represents a practical solution, since both colour models can be played back in a full range of hues.

Conclusion

Although the Hyundai W220S is a monitor that is aimed at the gaming sector, Prad has tested it thoroughly in every aspect. Naturally, the 3D effect in games is an especially positive aspect. Unlike the competition, Hyundai uses an alternative concept of 3D display, which allows the buyer great freedom in selecting the graphics card manufacturer and operating system. With the 3D effect, a completely engaging atmosphere is created, which does not allow the gamer to escape its spell with ease. The viewing angle and performance in 3D use require improvement.

In this context, the low and in no way noticeable input lag should also be mentioned here. On the other hand, the W220S has difficulty with displaying action-packed scenes and camera panning, which lose sharpness quickly due to a high response time. Gamers who enjoy older games will be pleased with the generous range of interpolation options.

Users which quieter working environments will hardly find the volume development of the Hyundai W220S irritating. However, extreme Silent PC fans should be warned that the backlight inverter draws attention to itself at lower brightness levels.

In terms of 2D image quality, the W220S did not really convince us. Thus, colour and grey gradients demonstrated clear banding and the bright patches also contributed. The extended colour space is certainly beneficial in the image editing sector, although the Hyundai W220S cannot be used in this sector because of its viewing angle. However, the sRGB colour space is considerably more suitable for video and gaming use.

In terms of ergonomics, the W220S did not offer any function other than a stiff tilting function. This is especially serious because the viewing angle is extremely limited in 3D usage. Thus, the user must always stay in the same position when gaming, which can lead to a stiff back amongst other things over long periods of usage. Here, we really felt the lack of a height adjustment feature.

Overall, the Hyundai W220S is a model for enthusiasts and hardware fans because of its price and special abilities. The W220S is not an alternative to other pure 2D models, which is why it is difficult to carry out a direct comparison. However, if you are prepared to pay the price of W220S and are looking for a monitor purely for gaming, you can be guaranteed impressive, gripping gaming enjoyment in 3 dimensions. We were very impressed with the model in 3D usage.

The following can be said with regard to the overall rating: if the Hyundai were purely a 2D display device, the W220S would just about manage a rating of satisfactory. However, the monitor also offers 3D technology, which naturally increases the value of the model. We evaluate the pure 3D performance if the model as good to very good. Accordingly, the overall rating for the model is good.

Overall rating: GOOD
