REVIEW: Samsung 191T
++ very good, + good, +/- satisfactory, - bad, -- very bad
The monitor, which is fabricated in Korea, makes a first class impression in respect of design. Particularly the very thin frame can score some point in the design category und leave the competition behind. The picture quality in digital and analog mode is really top notch. The quality of the colors is convincing and the contrast is overwhelming. The pivot function can be handled very easily. Additionally, the monitor allows for being slanted, height adjusted and swiveled to the sides. However the minimum distance between panel and ground is 126 mm.
Alongside to the LCD we received a CD (containing manual, the software "Natural Color" and drivers), a quick manual, an analog monitor cable and a digital monitor cable, a power supply unit and pivoting software. With Natural Color you are to make adjustments to the color configuration to create a monitor profile. This software also gives you the possibility of syntonizing you printer with the monitor profile.
Setting up the monitor is a matter of a few minutes only. The connectors on the rear side are easily accessible. Both the analog and the digital cable are already So connecting the cables isn't all-to easy. The gadget can be slanted to the front and to the back. The foot of the monitor permits swiveling. However, height adjustment or pivoting is not possible. The control elements of the OSD are placed in the middle and can be easily operated.
The image appears to be of first class quality. There is no need for altering the default settings because, because all predefined values seem to be ideal. All settings can be made using the OSD. The following options are available:
It's a pity that the OSD can not be rotated. When the pivot function is being used and so that the monitor is in portrait mode, the OSD is being shown on edge. But this is something that we consider as still bearable.
We had two monitors to our availability. One of them had 2 faulty pixels, the other one had no faulty pixel. The topic of faulty pixels and manufacturer fairness with reclamations has been extensively covered in our board.
For the application field of DVD and office the monitor can be recommended without constraints. Occasional gamers might be satisfied with the image quality as well, although it showed significant ghosting despite its response time of 25 ms. Distinct shifts in color can also be observed during scrolling. The Samsung 180T with 30ms which we have been also recently reviewing left a slightly better impression in this respect.
Whenever the brightness is being set below the value of 50 a sound from the interior capacitors becomes audible, which, however, will go away as soon as the brightness value is being set above 50 again. This has to do with the backlight and is a result of the specific construction.
All in all, the customer receives a monitor that is recommendable (except for hardcore gamers perhaps) without restrictions of any kind.
This is maybe the only real point of critique we have to address to Samsung. You can buy this gadget for 1.398,00, but also for 1.800,00 EUR. We regard a difference of 400 EUR to be out of the question. How this kind of difference is possible? At Dell, you can obtain the Dell 1900 TFT for 1.398,00 EUR. This monitor only differs by the labeling that says "Dell" in the upper left corner and not "Samsung" in the lower left corner, the slightly varying OSD, and the lack of a pivot function of the pedestal. I think that if one doesn't need the pivot function can buy the monitor at Dell without regret. For 1.502,72, so still 300 EUR less expensive, you can get the Samsung 191T in Denmark from itbutikken.dk. The currently least expensive price in Germany is just below 1.600,00 EUR. But of course you are able to find the monitor at prices of 1.800 and more. These distributors go by the suggested retail price of Samsung which is 1.899,00 EUR.
Of course there is no pick up service for the displays from Denmark and the one by Dell is officially no Samsung and has no pivot function. Yet, these discrepancies in price are not justified from our point of view.
All aforementioned prices were valid at the date of our review.
