DisplayPort is a connection standard of the VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) for transferring image and sound content. The aim is to realise a speeding up of the digital interfaces for improving the image quality. This is achieved through a higher bandwidth and a lower lag. The data flow is fixed in one direction. These are based on micro-packages for better protection against interference.

If the four channels altogether, a channel can transfer up to 2.7 Gbt/s if there is a short cable length. For longer cables (up to 15 m), this rate changes to 1.62 Gbit/s. In addition to the data channels, there is also a type of help channel (auxiliary), which will be able to transfer up to 480 Mbit/s in the future. The help channel is used for auto transfer and for the monitor features (Display Data Channel, DDC).

Through its smaller size, which is comparable with a USB socket, this connection type is especially interesting for smaller devices such as netbooks.
