The amount of pixels placed on a given LC display is invariable, thereby determining the resolution of the panel. One speaks of native resolution whenever each pixel of the image that is to be displayed is represented respectively by exactly one pixel on the panel. For example, with 15 inch displays this is 1024 x 768 pixels (XGA resolution), with 17 and 19 inch displays it is 1280 x 1024 pixels (SXGA resolution). This is also why a display's native resolution corresponds to the highest resolution possible on its panel.
