Colors can be represented by mixing certain ground colors. A color space is created by choosing certain ground colors as a basis for displaying colors which then leads to a coordinate system. The selection of ground colors, the numbers of their possible nuances as well as the maximal intensity possible determine the reproducible color palette. Red, green and blue, for example, form the RGB color space which monitors use, whereas cyan, magenta, yellow and black (contrast) define the CMYK color space which printers make use of.
