Samsung introduced at the FPD International in Yokohama, Japan, a 19 inch monitor, which had a panel made out of conventional window glass. The display has the usual 19 inch resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 points, a contrast of 1,000:1 and a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m².

Normally a special sodium (salt) and non-alkaline (alkaline salt) glass substrate is used for the production of LCDs. Conventional glass containing sodium, like the one used for windows and glasses, is itself not clean enough for the use in the LCD area.

Not only that, but it is also very hard to obtain the thickness of only 0.7 to 0.5 mm for the thin LCD glass panes. However, Samsung still was successful at building a TFT monitor out of “window glass”, which has specifications that correspond to normal displays. In addition, it can cover 72 percent of the NTSC color area.

"Soda-Lime"-Mass production is to start shortly

The goal of the technology named Soda-Lime is to substantially reduce production costs, since the special glass substrates for the manufacturing of LCDs is expensive. Samsung announced that the first Soda Lime panels will shortly be mass manufactured.
