Panel market: Korea flirting with China

Traditionally, the panel manufacturers in the small island nation of Taiwan have very good relationships with the Chinese market area and come out on top of the strong competition from Korea all year round. However, as DigiTimes reports, quoting unnamed sources, this situation could soon change, since Korean panel manufacturers will renegotiate panel prices for the entire year with Chinese TV producers at the start of the new year.

Currently, Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) is the largest panel supplier for China with a market share of 30 percent; the company was able to sell around 7.8 million TV panels in China in the first three quarters of this year. By the end of the year, this figure is set to rise to as much as 11.3 million units.

This market dominance of Taiwan is of course a thorn in the side of many Korean manufacturers such as LG Display and Samsung. Both companies were responsible for around 35 percent of the total TV panel sales to China in the first three quarters and are likely to focus on favourable sales conditions during the price negotiations at the start of the year in order to further expand their market shares.
