A clever power saving concept from Toshiba makes the stand-by power consumption of televisions shrink. The so-called Eco-chip installed in the 32-inch model Regza 32BE3 for the first time is claimed to reduce power consumption to zero by the manufacturer. However, the TV shall always be accessible with the remote control.


Common problem of power supplies for laptops and smart phones, game consoles and TVs is that they consume electricity when switched off. By default, every TV set needs a small amount of power to keep the infrared sensor ready for the remote control. Sure pulling the plug saves electricity, but it is by no means convenient.


Here, Toshiba's comes simple solution into game: A storage capacitor, which is charged when the TV is turned on, supplies Eco-chip and infrared sensor with electricity stand-by mode.

Even during normal operation, the Regza 32BE3 is an undemanding unit: Its backlight, for example, draws 27 per cent less power than the BLU of the Regza 32A2. In addition, two power modes adjust the backlight by reducing its intensity by 50 or 75 per cent. An adaptive brightness system ensures that the image is still clear and sharp. The new, low-power Toshiba TV will be released in December, but it has yet to be determined where and at what price.
