With the introduction of a new payment system Panasonic provides safe and convenient TV shopping via its interactive Smart TV platform. In addition to a comprehensive portfolio of digital apps and VOD video, users of VIERA Connect can also order accessories for their TV sets, for example 3D glasses, Skype cameras and Wi-Fi adapters, as well as Logitech keyboards especially developed for Panasonic TVs.

Cooperation partner for the payment service is the e-commerce provider Digital River; the payment process is carried either with the credit card information stored in the Digital River account or direct debit. While the payment data are encrypted with VeriSign SSL Encryption technology, Digital River guarantees additional safety.

The new billing feature is available to all Panasonic customers with a VIERA-Connect compatible TV of the model year 2011. These include the plasma models of the VT30, GT30, ST33 and GW30 series, as well as the LCD TVs of the DT35, DT30, D35 and EW30 series.

According to the company, Panasonic is the first TV manufacturer to offer this service. Whether the "totally new shopping experience [will] revolutionize the online shopping" as claimed by the TV vendor, remains to be seen. Shopping with your remote control is not a novelty, after all: In 2003, Neckermann provided a TV shopping project via Multimedia Home Platform (MPH). In May 2011, the home shopping channel HSE24 provided a similar service via HbbTV.
