REVIEW: Samsung LE-52F96BD Part 2The F96 series currently consists of two models: the LE-52F96BD with 52-inch screen (132 cm) and the LE-70F96BD with 70-inch (178 cm) screen. We tested the 52-inch model, of which we had two models available. Thus, we could test extensively what the High-End television with its LED backlight can achieve and where the strengths and weaknesses of the LE-52F96BD lie. We used the following player devices: a PC, a Sony PlayStation 3, a Philips DVP5980 DVD player, a Topfield TF500PVR DVB-S Twin Receiver and a DVDO iScan VP50 video processor (scaler). The Samsung LE-52F96BD comes in a huge box (152 x 97 x 43 cm) made from thick, stable cardboard. The LCD TV is held in place numerous Styrofoam shells so that secure transport is guaranteed. The transport weight with packaging is 51 kg. The extras delivered with the 52-inch include a remote control with batteries, a power cable, a plastic cover, a cleaning cloth, a manual and the guarantee card. The scope of supply does not include signal cables or other accessories. A motorized wall bracket is optionally available for the LE-52F96BD; this can be panned by +/-20° and tilted by +5° to -20°. The wall bracket is programmable, so a set position can be restored automatically. Incidentally, the bracket is not compatible with the LE-70F96BD.
Advertisement A screen diagonal of 52 inches or 132 cm looks impressive on paper. When you are actually standing in front of the Samsung LE-52F96BD, however, it seems much larger. Together with its base, the television is 137.2 cm wide, 84.5 cm high, 32 cm deep and weighs 42 kilograms.
"WOW, it’s huge!" are probably everyone’s first words after unpacking the television. Almost the entire front of the LE-52F96BD and its base come in black piano lacquer design. To the right and left at the edges, a clear plastic strip and an anthracite-coloured section of the frame are visible. At the top and bottom, the frame is 6 cm wide. The entire width left and right is 10,6 cm, 7,1 cm on the black high-gloss frame, 1,5 cm on the clear plastic strip and 2 cm on the anthracite-coloured part of the frame.
Detail of the frame: the reflections on the high gloss surface are clearly visible. The buttons can be seen on the right. The Samsung LE-52F96BD is very elegant and gives a high-quality impression. However, the disadvantage of high-gloss surfaces is their susceptibility to marking, and so every fingerprint and every tiny piece of dust us unfortunately visible on the model’s surface. So you should plan to wipe the front and base daily in order to ensure that the elegant design does not lose its shine. Fortunately, the LCD TV comes with a suitable cleaning cloth.
