PLASMA: Project Kuro - the eighth generation from Pioneer

The benchmark for plasma on the way to perfection

Kuro offers a contrast ratio of up to 20,000:1 and 80% richer black levels.

For years Pioneer has set the standard in the plasma TV arena. Yet this year Pioneer, leaving no stone unturned with its eighth plasma generation, has developed innovations in every basic element of its plasma TVs: among the most positively welcomed are the new panel, new filters, and new video signal processing. Even the sound system benefited from improvements.

The primary goal of Pioneer's new development is to display the richest black possible; this is the basis for every display to be able to project powerful, vibrant colors. Hence this initiative carries the name "Project Kuro": the word "kuro" is Japanese for "black."

The 42" XGA and 50" WXGA plasma TVs belong to the new Kuro Series and have already been available in Germany since July, and a full HD series in 50" and 60" models is expected in September and October. The full HD plasma TVs will enter the market with a contrast ratio of up to 20,000:1, thanks to "Digital Color Filter III Plus," among other features. The resulting rich dark tones and vibrant colors derive from an improved cell structure combined with a "crystal emissive" coating and the first surface color filter. According to product manager Jürgen Timm, Pioneer is still working intensively on this filter in order to be able to surpass even currently expected performance.

Another goal for Pioneer engineers was to develop video signal processing that was completely free of ambient noise. This new development bears the name ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) and was even patented by Pioneer. In addition, the Kuro models have an "optimal" mode by which the image processing is permanently dynamically adjusted for source, light, and room factors. An intelligent brightness control makes sure that viewers always get the best picture, regardless of room lighting.

Pioneer naturally includes 24p support, since this functionality makes you the absolute front-runner in the market. This feature has been implemented since Pioneer's sixth generation, at a time when very few customers even knew what this feature was going to be good for.

All Kuro Series plasma TVs are equipped with up to three HDMI 1.3 ports. Unfortunately The XGA and WXGA Kuros using 1:1 pixel mapping have yet to live up to the first "high end" predictions. The full HD versions, however, are expected to have implemented this function.
