Good multi-purpose TFT for around €300

  • I'm looking for an TFT around the €300 mark. I could go a little higher if needed.

The screen will be used for a significant amount of gaming, but also for some graphics work, a lot of internet/application use, and the occasional video.

I play, and edit for, a lot of older games which don't support widescreen resolutions, and I don't watch that many videos, so I'm looking for a 4:3 or 5:4 aspect ratio.

I'm probably looking for a 19", since they have a good price/quality ratio and the 1280x1024 native resolution is high enough while not putting too much of a strain on the graphics card (I'll be buying an ATI X1950XT, which should be capable of handling most current games decently at higher resolutions, but still...) Also, a lot of old games don't support higher resolutions - though I'm currently using a laptop (IBM Thinkpad T43) with 1400x1050, and the scaling effects for smaller resolutions don't bother me in games.

Considering the varied uses I want this monitor for, I would rather have better colour quality than a tiny increase in reaction time. I like to play dark games, such as Thief, so I'd also appreciate good black levels.

I have no interest in features such as USB hubs, speakers, etc. - though they wouldn't put me off buying a screen, either.

I live in Ireland, but plan to buy the screen, along with other parts to make a computer, from an online shop in the U.K., possibly the likes of Dabs Direct, Ebuyer, etc. - computer parts are not cheap locally.

    Any advice would be appreciated.
