Eizo L768 or LaCie Photon20Vision II?

  • Hi everyone,
I'm going to replace my old CRT monitor (Sony 420GS trinitron) with a new TFT monitor.
I mainly use photoshop (I'm not a pro, but I'd like to see the pictures the best I can, without buying an Eizo CG! It's out of my budget), but sometimes I play games and watch dvds.
What do you recommend between the Eizo L768 and the LaCie Photon20Vision II? Or should I wait for the new L797 (but probably it will cost more than the Lacie)? How are these 2 monitors compared to my Sony?
    Thank you!

  • So what is your budget and which country do you live in?

Which games do you play - ego shooter or strategy?

  • Thanks for the reply Totamec,
I live in Italy and my budget is around 1000€... I play sports games mainly...

  • Ok,

so I think an IPS panel is best for you.

I don´t have a price list of italy. For a german user I would the give the advice to take a look on the NEC 1960nxi or the 1980sxi (I wrote a small test in english, take a look). But the best choice is the 797, as you mentioned.

The lacie is not very well knowed in germany, I never saw a lacie TFT.

Comparing a TFT with a CRT is quit difficult. Both have pros and cons. A small cons for the TFT is the black-colour range. A CRT has normally a better black as a TFT. But: we have a lot of german user who are working for printing/ grafic companies, they use IPS Panels and say that they black is really good enough for such works.

  • Thanks again Totamec,
and so the final choice should be between the Lacie and the 797, both with IPS panel, right? Do you have any idea about the price the 797 will sell and when they'll start selling it?

  • Price: around the first delivering price of the 788

    date: for christmas

the 797 is with an IPS panel, yes.

    No problem, in hurry sorry.

And how much is it? :D

  • The price seems interesting...
I noticed that a CG19 is sold in Germany at around 1400€ and above... In Italy it starts at 2200...
So maybe I could do an extra effort and get the CG19. Do you think it's worth it?

  • Only if you are a pro grafic user. For a semipro, the 797 is really just fine!
Save the money and make a trip to munich or to vienna.

  • I have a few questions more ;)...
Some time ago I saw an AG Neovo 19" with 1280x1024 resolution and the fonts, the desktop, the windows bar seemed too big (it seemed magnified) compared to CRT monitors.
Maybe I could take advantage of the Lacie 1600x1200 resolution instead of the 1280x1024 res of the Eizo L797.
What do you think about it?

  • Difficult question. I don´t know the Lacie. It will have the 20" IPS Panel from LG, which had in the past some quality problems. I´m a freak and would buy the Lacie to test it.

Did you know that you reduce the size of a windows bar?

    Questions are welcome ;)

  • I can't buy a monitor just to test it :D :D :D!!! However, I know I can reduce the bar, the icons or the fonts size but I want the same result without tweaking, leaving the native resolution...
What quality problems did it have?

  • The problem was the stripes mask, in a distance of 20cm you see the pixel lines. The new panels have still the problem but not that strong as the old panels, now you have to know that the pixel lines can be found to see them.

  • So it should be ok, but I remeber a user who saw those pixel lines til a distance of 80cm.

Again: the new problem is reduced at the new panels.

  • I found a con of having a 1600x1200 resolution... When I play games, I must use that resolution and it's quite impossible to achieve it now at a good frame rate (I have a Radeon 9800Pro, but in most games I can't go over 1280x1024)... It's a very hard decision...

  • Or you play in a 1:1 resolution: You have a black frame around the game screen. So you can play in 1280*1024 on a 20" device without any hardware problems.

  • But if I decrease the resolution the quality decrease as well, right? Or maybe playing in 1:1 with a black frame doesn't make the quality worse?
