LCD Without blur for gaming

  • Finally I found a site where there are many good reviews about monitors. Already mailed a link to the mates ;)

Now I've read already several: Samsung 226BW ; Eizo S2111W and the ViewSonic VX2235wm. But still I'm not sure... Yep, I'm a gamer with an old CRT 8)

I'm thinking off buying a widescreen monitor. But this will be used 90% for gaming, so it has to be very good.

A friend recently bought a 24" widescreen from Dell (don't know the actual type) and the image was perfect in the game (FPS: Vegas) when he was standing still. When he moved just forward or anything else not to fast, everything was also ok.

But when he needed to turn quicly 180°, I saw some blur. It didn't bother him, but my eyes needed a small fraction to adapt again. And because while playing a First Person Shooter, you need to turn a lot and most of the time very fast. I played on it for 15 minutes and I didn't like it. It bothered me to much. But my old CRT starts to bother me also. The colors are terrible against that LCD.

So my question is off course, is there an LCD's that doesn't have that blur effect while fast moving? Or better, is there an LCD that is better then my old CRT for gaming. (It just need to be as fast, because the colors on my CRT are terrible ?()

  • Hi Kibosh,

you should have a look at the NEC 20WGX² Pro. Although it´s only 20" you won´t find a better LCD for gaming. It has an IPS-panel and a very low response time.

But be aware of one circumstance:
Motion blur - i would prefer to call it the "sample-and-hold-effect" - is visible at all LCDs. If you are a pro-gamer you won´t be glad with any kind of LCD because of this. There are new technologies in development which could help to eliminate this effect to the human eye. One of these developments is to insert a black frame after each frame. Another development is to produce virtual flickering. Benq has developed some TFTs who use these techniques. But it´s still not perfect.

The Eizo is a very good allround TFT and most gamers are satisfied with it. But if you are very sensible it´s maybe not enough for you. I personaly also play a lot FPS games. And I personaly could live with it because of the benefits that you get with the S-PVA Panel of the Eizo. Especially in dark regions you see a lot (really a lot) more than you would see with a TN-panel. And the coulours are fantastic. Additionally the S-PVA has the best blacks - much better than on other LCDs.

The other TFTs you quoted include a TN-panel. It´s o.k. for gaming but there are many disadvantages. Dark greys often glide into black. And they can only produce 16,2 billion colours with dithering out of 262,000 colours.
And often the uniformity of the backround-lighting is not very good. So you will have to live with background bleeding.

I hope this information is useful for you.

  • One problem of TFT in regard to gaming that is often boasted by gamers in the german forums is that of latency. Most TFTs/LCDs introduce a lag of at least 1 frame (16 ms), many overdrive VA models (like your Eizo) will show a lag of 2 frames (33 ms). When you use monitor-interpolation of lower resolutions it will add even more latency of usually 1 more frame. Some TN models don't show any lag at all, some VA models will get along with only 1 frame lag but show more blur in return).

I consider upto 2 frames (33 ms) as playable for most users and 1 frame as preferable. But as I said, many hardcore gamers are concerned about the slightest lag and wouldn't even want to suffer any lag against their opponents.

    We're all mad in here...

  • Yes, it was helpfull. I guess I have sensitive eyes, and I guess that's the problem. Now I'm not a professional gamer but I do game a lot. Another thing is when I play long behind my old crt, my eyes starting to hurt also. So maybe that will be better with an lcd.

I've read the review of the NEC and this bothers me:

    PRAD Review NEC 20WGX2

The motion blur characteristic of LCDs as a result of their technology is also present in the NEC 20WGX2.

We rate the monitor’s responsive behaviour as good to very good overall. However, we cannot say for sure whether or not the LCD would meet the high demands of hardcore gamers.

Also the reflection in the panel is something I have doubts about.
Maybe I should find a store where I can loan some panels to see if they are ok for me. But I guess the store would laugh when I ask them that ?(

Any idea when those new technologies are coming? I've heard about the BenQ new 24", that would be very good. But didn't find a real review about it. And then, 24" is to big for me. I want max a 22".

Maybe I should by a new crt

Yes, you can say I'm also concerned about lag. You have lag from the online server where you play + the lag off the mouse and keyboard, lag from your own pc (I have that covered already :D ) and then add the lag from the LCD. That's why we try to keep everything as low as possible. Add all the small lags and you can have a lag just enough to make a difference in the game.

So is there a panel without lag and without motion blur? Colours, contrast etc should be good also, but that comes at a second place.

I'm still leaning towards the Samsung 226BW. But I've heard they make different versions off it, which are not all that good? ?( That off course really bothers me! There is in your buyers guide also the Dell E228WFP (didn't read the review yet), but also here I've heard that Dell sometimes put other panels in it.

EDIT: Just read the review about the Dell and it looks good. Do you know something about that story they sometimes put different panels in them? Because it might be the one then...
