Viewsonic VE902M, 23 ms MVA?

  • A new Viewsonic model has started popping up here again. Similarly to VX912 there are no specs on viewsonic.com. Found specs on Europe site though:

And the specs says 23 ms MVA weirdly enough. You could almost think that this could be a new MVA type panel and such.. but the monitor is priced insanely low. Almost as low as Acer's models. Anyone know what this is?

  • It's available since December.
It would seem to be a nice option considering the low price, but it's out of the race for most people since it has no DVI.

  • Ah. Missing DVI. Didnt observe that. Thanks!

I'm still puzzled that the DVI option is such a cost factor. I heard something about additional toll on DVI monitors since they are possible to connect to other media than computers.. but still.. it seems strange that the toll-difference would be that high.

  • Yes, I wish they just started ditching the analog connector and went with a "digital only" solution. After all, an AD-converter is much more expensive than DVI.

After influential associations of the IT sector immediatley were up in arms against it, the plans on introducing this ridiculous import duty on displays featuring DVI that you mentioned have been abandoned (in Germany that is) as quickly as they were presented.
But a final EU-wide decision is still due. The UK for instance put the toll into practice as of 1st October last year which resulted in the commission advising all the other countries to follow suit. But nothing happened so far. A decision is expected this year. Right now there is a lot of uncertainty in the market because of this.

  • That would be ideal, yes, to have only digital input. However the bandwidth limit of DVI specs could perhaps be troublesome high resolution displays. They need higher bandwidth DVI2 that is backward compatible and or something to take care of it.

There is also the issue with office and lowend machines using onboard gfx is also a problem.. they havent had DVI for a long time. Perhaps they are starting to get DVI nowadays?

Wow. You knew the details of the politics. :) Although it still sucks when politicians that have a hard time affecting real issues goes ahead and do something stupid like that just because the public knowledge is so low in the matter. However it also makes me a bit worried. Do you think the prices will rise even more on DVI screens if it goes through? Perhaps I will have to buy something soon.
