19"/17" recommendation

  • Hello all,

I am looking for a new LCD monitor and i need some advice.

Right now i own a Xelo SP1702 17" LCD. Probably well known in the german community. It is based on a samsung TN panel of 25ms response or so. Its 1 year old and i dont like and i dont know why i have been keeping it this long.

    My main gripes about it:

    - brightness/backlit: I dont know why but i get very tired on this monitor. Either it is very bright or there is something with the backlit frequency that i dont like. But it hurts staring at this monitor for long. I have 0 brightness setting and still get tired. I spent a lot of hours in front of the screen so confort is a must. If this is common with LCDs I might go for a CRT but space saving is critical for me also.
    - dark scenes: I hate when i am not able to see anything on dark movies or games. DOOM3 is a complete different game watched on a CRT. The Xelo only knows one dark colour: black (well, dark grey ;).

    My secondary gripes:
    - Viewing angle: really narrow. I care more for vertical than for horizontal viewing angle.
    - No DVI
    - It looks like color is darker in the upper part than in the lower part of the screen.
    - Lot of qulity seems to go away when lowering brightness.

The use I give to my monitor:

50% desktop use: programming + surfing.
30% movie watching: DVDs + Divx
20% games: Flight simulator, counter strike, more fps...

I am not a response time fanatic. What i mean: i want to play games acceptably without having to regret the money spent on the monitor. On the Xelo i dont notice any ghosting. So 16ms, 20ms is great for me. Even 25ms if the Xelo is 25ms, but im not sure.

I prefer 19" monitors since its better for 1280x1024 resolution.

The price is not really an issue if it is well spent money.

I hope you can help me on this. I have read tons of reviews yet i dont know what i need. Thanks deeply for your help.

  • First of all: welcome onboard.

It´s obvious that you need an IPS Panel. Its´s much better as a TN Panel in all the points you mentioned.

Where are you from? Please give me a link to your prefered dealer and I will mention some TFTs with pos./neg. points.

No budgetlimit? I like that 8)

  • Thanks tomatec!

    Im from Spain.

    Retailers:

    Spanish section of

    Those are some.

About the budget, if i need a pricey one i can get it but if i can get something good enough for less... Anyway, needless to say, confort and eye health come on top of all of that.

  • Spain.. Hmm nice country, good for shopping.

We have some "standard" allround devices which we recommended. They fit to your profil: Fujitsu Siemens P19-1A (exactly that one, not the P19-1!), Iyama 481, NEC 1960nxi. They have all the same panel. Only difference: the 19-1A has a better electronic. But the the 19-1A is EOL! So you have to hurry up a bit ;)

  • Liyama 481:

    Pro Lite E481S-B 529,00 EUR
    Pro Lite E481S-W 529,00 EUR

    Also available:

    E485 series for 461 €

    Fujitsu Siemens:

    Fujitsu Siemens ScenicView P19-1A ~780€

    NEC:

    MultiSync 1960NXi 599,00 EUR

Standard manufaturers in Spain are LG, Sony and Samsung. Other than that can get pretty expensive. For reference other tfts available:

    Belinea 101920 429,00 EUR
    Eizo L767 759€
    Eizo L768 729€
    SyncMaster 193P 729,00 EUR
    Viewsonic VP191b 549,00 EUR
    LG1920P 609 €

    What do you think?

  • Take the 481 (w=white, b=black). It´s the best one of the list.

It has an allround panel, IPS, the price is really good, better as in germany, and it looks cool 8)

Don´t take the 485, it has a MVA Panel which is not that well for players!

  • Ok, lets take a look:

    Luminosity: 250 cd/m2
    Contrast: 400:1

Many TN panels have that specification. It is this monitor more likely to comply?

The belinea that you have, how does it compare in ghosting effects with for example this iliyama.

Do you think this iliyama will have better dark coulour representation than my Xelo. How also does it compare with the belinea.

    Thanks for your help.
    jacaru.

  • Also,

¿What are the main diferences about the Liyama and the NEC?

    Thanks for your help tomatec.
    Jaime.

  • The Iiyama 481 has an IPS Panel which is equal to the NEC 1960nxi.

My Belinea has a ghostinc effec,t of course, but I don´t see it in games or during work, cause I`m concentrating on the game. When I start to watch out for ghosting, I see it, compared with the Iiyma it is much more stronger.

The colours on the Iiyama will be much better as the XELO (which has a too hard green and to low blue). The colours on my Belinea are still a bit better, specially the black, as the iiyama.

  • I am much more worried about ghosting effects on movies. Do you notice those on teh belinea?

Anyway, i am narrowing it down between the nec and the liyama.

The main difference i find is the contrast rating, 400:1 to 500:1. Do you think it justifies the price rise?

    Thanks again,
    Jacaru.

  • On Movies? Nope, not really. I saw once a ghosting in Matrix (you remember the green numbers?). I´m wachting a lot of movies on the Belinea.

It doesn´t justife the higher price, 400:1 is really perfect and "enough".

No problem ;) I´m happy about every user I can help to get the right TFT.

  • there seems to be a NEC 1970NXi around with better aesthetics than its previous model.

  • The 1970nxi is only a workaround of the 1960nxi. Maybe I have the luck to see it in 2 weeks.

  • the thing is i have the oportunity to get it even cheaper than the 1760nxi.

so if there are no major problems i may go for it. I like how it looks.

  • Cheaper as the 1760nxi? Wow 8o Can I order five or six? ;)

For a price like that and your profile, I would buy it.

  • Ok, I got the 1970NX. The screen is very good, improves in all the points stated before but one...and i think is a problem with myself rather than with the monitor.

I cant stand the luminosity, mainly on whites. Its like a lamp direct to my eyes. I have unfortunately not many options. I have no space for CRT in front of me, only looking at it sideways, the crt at a diagonal line and the keyboard and mouse infront of me. reconfiguration of my room to fit it infront is almost impossible. Maybe one solution is a adjustable tray to hold the monitor that i can take away when i dont need it, but is there any capable of holding the weigth of a 19" crt? Maybe one of those trays for the keyboard and mouse?

    Also:

    - Anyone knows of an eye friendly windoes theme?
    - Anyone knows of software which will let me have monitor brighnest/contrast presets and set the with a fast click? Is that through DCI or something like that?
    - My monitor has text, image, video backlight luminosity presets. And also has a color profile sRGB. When i set sRGB i cant use the presets. What is sRGB?

    Thanks,
    Jaime.

  • i was thinking on buying an optical filter. Are there any for TFT. I can only find for CRT and have a hard time finding one of 19 inches. Thanks.
