Gaming/Movies but 24bit

  • hi, i'm in the UK and looking to spend up to £250 max on a 17" or 19" tft monitor.

    Usage:

    40% films
    30% games
    15% graphics work
    15% coding & office work

HOWEVER, as well as being able to play games etc without ghosting, I want a full 24bit (or 8bit or 16.7 million colours if you prefer) screen for my graphics work.

I've heard that due to manufacturers exaggerated claims, in reality I want 12ms or below as a response time, and 400:1 or greater for contrast.

Any suggestions would be REALLY appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  • It´s quit simple: you need a device with IPS panel.

Give me a link to a shop where you wanna buy and I´m gone help you.

  • thanks for your quick reply. I can get any brand available in the UK - get staff discount at my old place of work, and can get any brand I want at trade prices. I have heard of TN and MVA panels, but cannot find any references to IPS panels anywhere other than a few forums?

    thanks again.

  • Try looking for those IPS-panels from this article.

And examples of monitors with IPS-panel are:
    Iiyama E481S
    FSC P19-1A
    NEC 1960nxi
    LG L1910B

  • Perfect advice :)

This are really the best TFTs you can get. You can see it as a sorted list, so the Iiyama is the first choice for you.

You can look to the NEC 1970nxi too.

  • Excellent, I've read the article, but it has raised a couple of points. Excluding the Iiyama H340 which I don't want due to its slow response time, all the IPS panels seem to be 19", which would be fine, except that the subsequent increase in price is taking them outside of my budget. Any solutions for around £250 max? 17" is fine if necessary.

  • Now we are getting in trouble.

Why is the 430 slow? You know that the response time is not everything? The iiyama 430 with 25ms is as fast as a TFT with 16ms TN panel. The 430 is the best 17" device you can get. So don´t worry about the responsetime!!!

There are none 17" IPS TFTs with a respnsetime under 25ms.

  • Totamec, according to the spec sheet on the Iiyama web site, the Iiyama H430 has an MVA panel, not on IPS panel. The feature guide on prad.de however says it's an IPS panel. Which one is correct? Or did they change the panel without changing the model number?

    See: H430

  • Thank you for the hint! I will talk to our database admin.

I was of the opinion with the VA panel too.

  • So if the H430 is an MVA, it will be too slow for Rick's purposes (30% gaming).

Actually, are there still 17" TFTs with IPS on the market? I believe not. So unless the Iiyama E481 has come down in price in the UK as it did in Germany, he will have to look for a TN to stay within budget...

  • Thanks for all this help everyone, it's really appreciated. I've done some more research, and come up with a few "normal" panels that may fill my requirements I think, comments and personal experiences are welcome.

    Acer AL1715MS - 12ms, 24bit
    GNR TS700 - 16ms, 24bit
    Philips 170B5CB - 16ms, 24bit

I can't believe I'm the only person after a monitor with these kind of features, so I don't believe that the models above are the ONLY ones that fill my needs, surely there are others?

As a sidenote, I used to have a iiyama AS433UTBK (which I've found has an IPS panel)for photo work, and thought it was awesome for image quality, that's the kind of thing I'm aiming for, but with gaming/dvd performance too.

  • First of all, the 430 has really a VA panel now, the old version had an IPS panel.

I´m gone look-up some more devices tomorrow for you. I had a bad day with my dentist.

  • Many thanks. I mistyped the model name, should have been AS4332UTBK just for the sake of being correct.

I'd just like to say thanks to everyone that has posted so far, the amount of help and patience I've received so far has been far better than any other forum I've ever used for any topic.

I look forwards to hearing your reccommendations Totamec :)

  • So after looking around a bit, I found only one device in your price class and which is a good solution: Philips 170B4BS. It´s fast enough for games, has a good viewing angle.

The ones you selected, have a TN panel. That means, it´s fast, but colours are not that well (red is sometimes a bit of orange or green is too green) and they have a small viewing angle. As you wrote some poastings before, I think you will not be happy with that!

  • thank you for the suggestion, however, the cheapest I can find it anywhere in the UK is £300, way over my intended budget.

I have had GNR reccommended to me by several different people independently, as being both very cheap, but equally very good quality. I headed over to their website, and the specs seem to uphold this claim

    TS700 - 17", 16ms, 500:1, 16.7million around £160
    TS900 - 19", 16ms, 500:1, 16.7million around £240

Both of these are TN panels I noted, and the other negative thing that struck me was that the 19" panel only did 1280x1024 - how does this resolution appear on that size screen?

Damn the UK and our rubbish prices!!!!!!!!! 8o

  • 16,7Mio colours + TN Panel? I think, that will not work out probaly ;)

    1280*1024 + 19" is quit perfect for office users! It´s much more better as 17" + 1280*1024.

I don´t know the GNR products in detail, I know only that they are cheap supermarket products.

    Your prices are really high...

What is about LG products? I don´t like LG, but maybe they are cheap.

  • not sure - i compare all my prices using both uk.nextag.com and uk.pricerunner.com

Here's an idea which may solve my problem - if I was to get a cheap(ish) CRT for use at home to do my photo work on, would a 6-bit TFT display be sufficient to do web graphics and site design on, as well as the games and movies mentioned earlier?

In case you're wondering why I'm saying that, I'm not always at home, and hence TFT is needed for portability, but I'm nearly always at home when I'm doing photo work, as that's where my printer, graphics tablet etc etc are. Having 2 monitors may be a pain, but I can switch colour profiles easily enough, and it looks like doing this may save me a LOT of money! (seen several highly praised gaming 6bit tfts for under or around £200, and I can pick up a decent CRT for next to nothing at where I used to work).

  • awesome, thanks very much for all this help.

I've been looking at the Iiyama e435s and Belinea 101735 on strength of reviews elsewhere (can't read german fluentyl so cant use this site), any opinions on these screens?

Also, the advisory sticky thread was where I started my search for recommendations, but it seems very out of date (october)? Any plans for a current one?
