Advice needed - NEC 1980 SXi or EIZO 788K, or ?

  • Hi all members :)
I'm new member of this forum. I know that there was many of topics about wich LCD should buy, but...
If you got few minutes, please help me to do best buy.
I'm looking of LCD for gaming (like America's Army, Counter Strike Source, UT2K4, Lock On, Pacific Fighters, Richard Burns Rally), some DVD movies, web surfing, etc.
I was decide to buy Viewsonic VP 912S, but its still not avaible in Poland.
So, i decide to look for something new.
I read a lot about diffrence betwen displays, but there was no cleary, which is best, what kind of display is for...

    I found this five diffrence LCD's :
    1. NEC 1980 SXi black (S-IPS, 25ms, pretty nice)
    2. NEC 1970 NXi (looks like the same - S-IPS olso, but there is not rapid rsponse technology - btw what the hell is that?)

    3. EIZO 788K (PVA ?, 25ms, pretty nice too)

    4. Samsung 920T (but this frames :( ;) )

    5. Viewsonic 191b (MVA ?, 16ms)

What do you think about it ? Wich one is for me ? I read a lot about ghosting effect, but i think it is very personal so if someone using any of this monitors for this things, please tell me about your feelings.

Btw, now i'm using Samsung 959 NF 19'' CRT, but i have no speace for it, so i need to sold it.
It would be great if you will decide to help me.
What going on with this S-IPS, PVA, MVA, TN ? I read that TN+ is best for gaming, but i read that good S-IPS is also ok.

  • Hello and welcom

If you play fast games (Ego-Shooters like UT) you should take a TFT with IPS or TN Panel-
TN Panel are the fastest, but with point of view restrictions.
(S-)IPS Panel are good Allround Panels. The point of view ist good and ist fast enough for games.

VA (PVA and MVA) Panel have the best point of view, but are the slowest Panels.

Take a look at this. Here you can compare TFTs. You can also see the dates of the TFTs, included the used Panel.

  • Thank You for answer.
So in Your opinion i should take NEC 1980 SXi on S-IPS ? I called to polish officila partner (NEC Poland) and they said that the display is "brand NEC" whatever it means :) I hope it means, that NEC panel is inside.
They also said, that 25 ms response time in S-IPS is somethink like 16 ms on TN+, so if its true should be ok.
    What do You think ?
NEC should have around 20.02.2005 new monitor 1970 GX - for gamers, but its on TN+. Maybe i should wait ?

    greetings,

    Peacemaker.

  • If time is no problem, I woud wait.
The advantage is, that the "older" TFTs could get cheaper.

In case of no time, I woud buy 1980SXi or 1960NX / 1970NX.

  • Thanks for advice.
I think i will order Nec 1980 SXi tommorow. Should arrive to end of the week.
If You want, i'll give You a sign how it works :)
Btw - i saw Your NEC (from Your sig) - really great one :) new S-IPS with 16ms?
    Pretty nice :)

    Peacemaker.

  • It's the old one with 25ms S-IPS (the 2080UX without +).
Realy fast Panel. A bit slower then the new UX+.
The Panel of my 2080UX is from NEC Mitsubishi.
The one build in 2080UX+ ist from LG.

It would be very nice, if you write us a test report.

  • Ok ! There it is :) I got my NEC 1980 SXi !
Now, before i'll start testing, i got two questions :
    1. What is the diffrence between DVI-I and DVI-D (now i'm using DVI-D) ? My monitor is connected to Leadtek 6800 GT witch digital output.
    2. I'm using 6500K profile. Is this ok ? Where i can find some setups for this S-IPS panel ?

    Greetings,
