EIZO S1910 backlight problem?

  • Hello,

Recently I got my new Eizo S1910.
When I use it in a dark room (at night, with light off) to see a movie or a picture which does not fill the screen - due to the wide aspect ratio (i.e. leave black stripes on the top and bottom of the screen), the black stripes are not that black... I can see the screen's backlight through them.

The screen is set to be in the "movie mode" or "picture mode" and the contrast is set to be 30% - 50% (no contrast setting will show true black).

when I turn on the light in the room, the problem doesn't exist, and the background looks black.

Does anyone have the same problem? is it common on LCDs, and specifically on the s1910?

    Thanks,
    Ran.

  • On every LCD you can see (more or less) that the backlight is shining through but the S1910 should have a very good black level because of its S-PVA panel. Monitors with a TN panel have a much more worse black level.

Is this your first LCD monitor? If so I could imagine that you are not accustomed to the peculiarities of LCD monitors - the shining through is one of them. You won't get a 100% black, especially not when you have turned off all lights in your room.

Maybe you should visit the next computer store and try to get a demonstration of a LCD monitor with a black screen. Also try to get a TN panel based monitor (normaly the cheap ones *g*) for this so the shock effect will be better because there you will see a really bad shine through 8o
And I'm sure after this you will love your S1910 with its black level. But if you don't see a real difference it might be possible that your EIZO monitor is not alright.

  • Thanks.

It is my first LCD, so I didn't know that its a technology issue. My CRT (and TV) looks best in the dark.
I'll try to take a look at some other monitors at work or at a computer store (It's hard to believe that a computer store will be willing to blank out for me...).

BTW: what brightness and gamma values you use?
also, the s1910 does not allow to set the contrast, unlike other screens - which is strage.

I was trying to calibrate my monitor using this page:
and it was quite hard to notice the differece between the two darkest rectangles (on the default gamma 2.2 setting). lowering the gamma to 1.8 made the colors too bright. the darks were more noticable when looking at them slightly indirectly. - is it like that with your s1910 also?

    thanks again

  • The only way to change the contrast is playing around with the values of saturation and gamma. Keep in mind that every mode has its own properties (e.g. in sRGB mode you can only change the brightness) and default setting.

The most time I use the sRGB mode with a brightness of around 40 - 60%; depends on the daylight. At night I use the custom mode (default settings) and a brightness of 10 - 15% because the basic brightness of the sRGB seems to be around 20% higher than all other modes, and that's too bright at night.

On the linked page I can see the difference of the last two black stripes. The difference is very small but it is visible. Right now I use the sRGB mode and a brightness of 60%.

  • thanks shoggy.

I checked at work today and most of the LCD monitors (mainly the cheep ones) had a much worse black glowing in the dark. so I guess my monitor is OK. I just won't use it in complete darkness.

As for the contrast bars - the difference between the last two is noticable when looking quite carfully and is more noticable in some angle off the center (i.e. when scrolling the bar to the top or bottom of the screen). again I checked this with other monitors and it was quite the same if not worse.

I also tried the Nokia monitor test:
to see the gray shades there, and i could see clearly the 2%, and the 1% was harder to notice (again, it depends a little of the viewing angle like described above). The other monitors I checked were worse at this test - could only see the 3%-5% clearly.

I think my monitor is OK after all. I guess I was a little perfectionist after buying an EIZO. besides, this monitor has been already replaced after the first one had a bad sub-pixel.

    thanks
    Ran.
