New Nec Multisync P241w causes headaches

  • Hello,

I recently bought a Nec Multisync P241w CCFL lid IPS monitor, and i'm having major headaches from it.
I have read all threads in german and english that mentioned headaches / kofschmerzen / Ubelkeit etc..
and also the interesting article about backlight "flickering" http://www.prad.de/new/monitore/specials/backlight.html</a>

I've read that some people had headaches at the beginning and after a few weeks the headaches were gone...
This gave me hope . so i decided to keep the monitor , but my headaches are still present after three weeks of usage..

At first I ordered a Nec MultiSync EA232WMi, which was a good screen but the vertical resolution was too small for me, so i returned it for the more expensive P241w ccfl , the MultiSync EA232WMi monitor was led backlit and caused no headaches..?

Can someone help me out on this..?

My monitor runs at its native res 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz
Main use is Internet browsing and webdesign > photoshop > illustrator etc..
Color mode is set to sRGB and the brightness is set at 105 cdm (is this right , or too low , or wrong color mode?..)

My video card is a geforce gtx 560 ti
    Brightness 17%
    Digital Vibrance 34%
    Contrast 2%
    Gamma 1.0
    Hue 0

i have 20/20 vision (no glasses..)

Is this the right way to use a monitor and color setup..? (i don't have hardware to calibrate my screen..)
i downloaded an .icc profile from a tft central p241w review but i don't now how to use this kind of profiles

I've used my 20" Lacie 120 LCD for 6 years 8hours a day without headaches, this is a active matrix screen..

A year ago I had a Eizo s2433w, which i returned within 3 days becasue it also caused seriuos headaches, is this also a
    CCFL lid screen..?

If the headaches don't leave I have to sell the p241w and realy don't know which other monitor to buy? I realy like the 1600x1200 res, or the 1920 x 1200

Hope someone can help me out!

  • I have the P241 since 4 days and have absolutely no problems with it.

Could you please quote the reports, where you said that you read something about the P241 causing headaches ? Many thanks.

I couldn't find any reference. All articles that I found describe headaches in general or caused by other monitors, i.e. with LED backlight. Nothing in regards to the P241w...

The P241 uses the CCFL backlight which is also in use by the PA241, maybe for this reason to be friendly to the eyes.

I am using the monitor with a Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 (connected via Display Port).

Yesterday I worked with a Laptop the whole day, connected via VGA port. Absolutely no problem and I am really very satisfied with it.

I am using mainly 2 profiles from the monitor:
    a) "High Bright" with auto brightness enabled
    b) in the evening I use "Full" with manual settings for brightness, usually set to 190cd/m^2

I never had such a nice TFT monitor like this one.

  • Hi

in regards to your questions some ideas.

I regard 100cd as too low. You should have turned on some surrounding light in the evening, so that the difference between display brightness and your room is not like "black&white" .. So in the evening I am comfortably with settings like 180-190cd.

Another thing which could be a trigger for you. When we bought a new TV, then we switched from 4:3 22" to 16:9 42". This was quite a big change. We sit 3 - 3.5m in front of this screen and the sales guy told us that some people have difficulties, because their eyes start to move as they are not capable of viewing the whole scene at once. Maybe some limitation of view angle of the eyes ... I had no headaches but it lasted 2 weeks for me until I was really comfortably looking. Bluray in 1080p was never a problem. But if you see media content (normal tv series) which have a lower reolution. Especially then it looked 1st a little bit strange.
After a month and more I got so much used to 42" that its absolutely no problem anymore.
But even then I would recommend not to do the mistake to buy a larger at this close viewing distance, as you surely do not want to cound pixels when not having full hd content :)

Back to monitor. I sit 71cm in front of the screen. Before I had an 19" 4:3 monitor from Medion (Aldi). It is a difference to have such a big display in front of me. But I quickly got used to. At work I am using 2 Sun Monitors, 20", 1280x1024. My viewing distance is never below this value.

Maybe it makes a difference to you when
    - having the room lit (I also have a light beneath the monitor lightening the area behind the monitor, and a little of my desk)
    - using in the evening maybe a higher brightness than the auto brightness is giving you
    - measure the distance, maybe you are sitting too near, try 70-75cm
    - try another monitor profile, I personally liked "High Bright" and "Full" more than sRGB

Most of the time I use over day with sunshine "High Bright" with "auto brightness" turned on
In the evening I am using "Full" with manual setting for brightness (~190cd).

I tried eco modes, but then I am missing a bit of contrast ...

And of course make sure with your doc, that you do not need glasses...

  • I am using now the sRGB profile of the monitor with automatic brightness turned on.

In windows colormanagement "systemsteuerung farbverwaltung" I choosed own settings and choosed:
"sRGB IEC61966" as standard profile. I think this ICC profile will be there after installing the driver from the nec CD.

Then really read the instructions how to setup automatic brightness.

When you are in the enhanced menue (page1) then
    a) Turn on all the lights in your room and set a comfortably value (I choosed 200cd)
    b) then turn off all the lights and choose a comfortably value (I choosed 90cd)

Turn on the lights again, and you will have the monitor automatically selecting the brightness to your taste.
Its now around 200 ... sometimes little more, sometimes little less +/- 10

    Hope this helps !

  • Hi Andreas,

Many thanks for your efforts and advice,

At the moment i'm switched back to my old Lacie 120 Lcd (Active Matrix) 20" screen..
    My headaches disappeared right away..

    Brightness too low:
105cmd - 120 cdm is indeed very low, but when i turn up the brightness my eyes start hurting..
360 cdm is it's max brightnes , divided bij 2 is 180cdm = 50% of the maximum brightness..
maybe at my low brighness setting the backlight is pulsating at a frequency i cannot handle..?
the lower the value the stronger the pulse..?..

It would be nice if PRAD could review and test this Monitor !

Your point about the size could also be right, at a 20" inch screen i can see everything in one go
at the 24" my yes need to do some extra work..

I'l hook up the screen i a few days (at the moment to busy..) I'll give your brigtness setting/setup a go..

What are your video card setting..?

    Thanks in advance!

Ps: there are no other threads concerning the p241w and headaches...only other screens are mentioned..

  • Hi Andreas,

    [...]
What are your video card setting..?
    [...]

    Hi Arn,

grafic card settings are default, nothing special.

When looking at extended settings (list of all supported modi), I discovered that 1280x1024 can be displayed with 75 Hertz.
Maybe try this mode to see, whether the Hz change from 60 to 75 Hz makes things better for you.

I discussed the size of monitors today with a colleague, I told him 24" inch monitor and Pivot doesnt make much sense,
as then the Monitor is very very tall ... He agreed and said better would be to take 2 smaller monitors.
One for "Landscape" and the other for Portrait (pivot).
This is nowadays no problem as you can get many graphic cards with 2 DVI ports or one DVI and one display port.
Maybe you can operate both screens then with a higher Hz value as with 1920x1200 ?! Just a thought.

  • Hi All.

Finally my headaches are gone..(i used my old monitor for a few days, and rethought my new setup)

    step 1:

I've used the original hdmi/dvi cable that came along with the monitor (instead of the old one that was
    connected to my system)

    Step 2:
I removed the extra added light in my room (2 Fluorescent Light bulbs / TL light..)
I added those lights the day after i installed/placed the new monitor, because my room was a bit to dark

now i use a 250watt t3 Halogen lamp pointed at the ceiling as indirect light..which is much better

after i've made those 2 steps my headaches disappeared..

    Best,
