Eizo l885 S-IPS

  • hi,

tomshardware.com recently reviewed the new (or revised?) eizo l885 with the s-ips panel. surprisingly, the panel got very bad marks for games and dvd playback.

    tomshardware review:

does anyone have any personal experience with the monitor? I've been waiting a long time for the new s-ips panels to come out and according to early reviews, their performace does not seem much better than PVA/MVA panels.

    thanks

  • Hi,

please don´t trust Tom´s Reviews. The Eizo doesn´t have an IPS-panel. This information is not true. The panel is an ASV-panel (by Sharp) which is not such good for fast gaming (FPS).

If you would buy it only for imaging, you are right.

The philips 200p4 has the new LG-Philips IPS-panel like the NEC 2080ux+, the Dell 2001FP, the LG2010p and maybe the new Viewsonic VP201.

This panel-type has actually big problems. I already had the NEC2080ux+ myself and like many others here I recognized a very grainy image quality. In the german part of prad this effect is called "REBK´sche Streifen" because the first person who described it was a user called "REBK".

Every second pixel-line is a bit darker. It looks as if there are stripes all over the panel. In addition to that there are "running" interferences, which can be only eliminated by driver settings (ATI) or by Powerstrip-software (changing the frequency). It seems so, as if NEC wouldn´t be able to solve the problems. Maybe it´s too expensive to change all the TFTs.

I wouldn´t recommend a TFT with this panel by now.

It is very good for FPS (First-Person-Shooters) and I couldn´t see any ghosting. It is as good as excellent 17" TN-panel-TFTs for gaming, but the problems are still too big to accept. :( :(

The German law makes it possible to send the TFT back within two weeks so that I could get my money back. I was very happy that I could use this option.

    Greetings

  • thank you for the clarification.

from your post, i gather that eizo l885 is good for graphics/color intensive tasks but not for games and dvds.

this is surprising as the monitor (as listed in prad databank) is listed to have a response time of 20ms. perhaps this is also due to the 8bit to 10bit color dithering?

  • I have used the Eizo L685 and I have found the same effect described in the Tom's Hardware review. :(
See my post "Eizo L685 flickering" in the english Help section.

I don't know if the problem is really due to 10bit dithering or something else... but I have used many LCDs and I never seen something like this.

The same effect is not present in the MultiEdge series monitors.
    I have a L767 + L367 and tried L565.

The L885 can't be the best solution for video and gaming, but I'm sure for other purposes is a top-monitor.

Try2fixit but you are sure the "REBK" effect is present in all monitors with the new 20'' LG.Philips panel? ?(

A similar thing I have seen in the Acer AL732 due to dithering technique.
But I don't think this panel have dithering...

  • Hi,

I think that dvd-watching is not a problem for the Eizo.

Some Eizos have shown flickering when D-Sub was used. DVI should stop this.

You can´t compare the "REBK" effect with the dithering-effect. The dithering is nothing against the REBK-effect. Dithering is disturbing me a bit while REBK-effect makes me really angry. I could easily live with dithering, but I couldn´t live with the REBK-effect.

All monitors with the new 20" LG-Philips panel do have this problem.

This sound very strange for expensive products...

Now I understand why Eizo has chosen the Sharp panel.

I hope LG.Philips will solve this problem or Nec will produce a better substitute.

  • Hi,

yes, I think that this was the reason for Eizo, not to choose this panel for their L885. And I think, that this decision was right.

I don´t expect LG-Philips to solve the problem. LG is very dominating in the display-production. And if there is not enough competition, they can do what they want to do.

  • I´m owner of Eizo´s Flex Scan L885. Let me tell you that this monitor has great features both in hardware quality and management.
As my hobby is videographing I cut, edit and control my movies on this monitor. It works without any technical and visible problems. Even DVD playback is more than fine.
So don´t be afraid: a very, very good monitor!!
I think, TOM´s Hardware did a pretty bad work when testing this monitor...

    Hi,

thank you very much for your impressions. Maybe you could write some about the ghosting in games (maybe UT2003)? Would be very interesting for me.

  • thank you for your comment

I've always heard great things about Eizo monitors and was surprised by tom's review as well.

I have an opportunity to purchase this monitor at a discount (must decide by today) - can you comment more on DVD and video playback? How does the quality compare to CRT monitor?

I actually emailed Eizo technical support (US) about tom's review. Here was their reply regarding DVD playback:

I really don't know type of video card the person who did the review was
using but to the best of my knowledge I believe that the lagging is cause by
the combination of the graphics card and the response time of the LCD. I
have tested the monitor personally with the Matrox Parhelia graphics card
and the monitor performs very well with the DVD.

    Hi,

sag das doch gleich. :D ;)
