Choosing the right S-IPS (or possibly PVA)

  • Thanks Totamec. You are, once again, very helpful :)

I can't seem to find Nec 1960nxi at a reasonable price. Still looking.. I will buy if I find a reasonable price.

As for Lacie Photon19vision I can get it at 566 EUR (+ 15 EUR shipping).
Nice things about it are the stand (good ergonomics, Pivot too) and DVI-cable is included. I just like them with many features ;) If it really has the same panel as Iiyama E481 and NEC 1960nxi, shouldn't I go for this Lacie instead?

I think I'll go look for some Lacie reviews now..

  • 566? Thas is word. Buy it. No asking, no fearing, go and get it!

Lacie buys the same moduls as Iiyama did. So we found what you need!

  • Yay! :D
So Lacie Photo19vision seems like the tft for me. I think I'll buy it. It is for sure I can't get Nec 1960nxi at that price.. or Iiyama.
Price variations for Photo19vision here go from that 566 to 832, medium price is about 622 EUR. What is it in Germany then?

Yea, that Lacie also has USB. Nice. And Pivot-software is included.
Only worry I have is their dead pixel policy. BeHardware reviews dead picel policies:

Compare that policy to.. say Viewsonic - a major difference. So I really have to hope it has no dead pixels. When you don't get to test it first you newer know. I just mailed Lacie Tech Support, asked them to verify what their pixel policy is.

And reviews.. only found one - that is by PCworld.

They rate Lacie below LG 1930B. Strange. And the winner in this class is VP912B. I have my doubts.

  • Forget those tests. The papers get small presents for good work, you understand ;)

The lacie lies around 680-750 if I´m right. That is really expensive for a 19" TFT at the moment.

Lacie uses Class II: you can have dead pixels. But don´t worry. As long as they don´t blink, they are not that wild.

Dude, you are not very sleepy ;) :D

  • Oh my, I forgot those tests instantly.. memory is getting worse with age ;)

    Just ordered Photo19vision 8)
It'll come tomorrow if they can manage to send this evening. But if not then I'll have it on wednesday. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything is okay when it arrives.

Damnation, I feel better already. This chase for the optimum monitor for my use took way longer than my posts on these forums show. If only I had know of this forum earlier, would have saved so much time. The best help I got was here.

I'll be sure to write a review when I feel I know the monitor well enough. Will borrow a digicam from a friend so I can post some pictures too. So.. a review coming in few weeks or so :)

Yea, I'm not too "sleepy" ;) But Speepyghost, name of my webiste, somehow fits me well. Where does "Totamec" come from? Total mechanic / mechanoid / mech / totally mechanical ... I'm having fun guessing :D
Somehow "totamec" also makes me think of the ancient aztecs.. it has that ring to it.

  • Thank you!! Tell your friends of prad.de, we are very happy about every new user!

I will keep my fingers crossed for you too.

Totamec was a soldier who was in love with cleopatra. He did everything she wants from him to impress her. I´m as stupid as he was when it comes to the point of love.

I´m thinking all the time about speepyghost. Help me out with the right meaning please.

  • Thanks, big thanks, go to you :)
I most certainly will tell my friends of prad.de .. as some of them might come to me for TFT advice.

So that's who Totamec was. Beautiful background story, romantic, a well chosen handle. I think I'm just as stupid when love comes knocking. Often it ends up hurting, but hey, such is life. I believe in being brave in love and not overly careful. Life is meant to be lived :D

Sleepyghost is not that well thought of. Most clever short website names were taken, Sleepyghost just came from somewhere. But I'm really glad I found it before someone else did. Those who know me well find the name fitting. I sleep and am awake at strange times, work whenever I feel like it (no steady job), and so often go sleepy-like by day. And I guess I lose myself in imagination sometimes, ghost-out or something.. good books do that to me. So there.. best I could come up with at the time.

  • Nope. But I received confirmation today that it has been mailed. It should come tomorrow around midday. I'll give my first impressions soon after.

More complete review can wait until I get my new computer set up. I have been waiting for my Nforce4 motherboard (A8N-SLI) for a month now :( Should come on 25th. Then I can build the monster and do my review with some games too.. like Halflife2 :)

I have noticed people on the forum have been using some sort of program to test their monitors. Can you recommend one like that? I will use something like that if it is freeware, shareware or such. Thanks.

Oh and no hurries. It will be weeks before I can do my review. I'll be back tomorrow with first impressions (good ones I hope).

  • You mean the Nokia Monitor tester? It´s for free. Link

Or do you mean PixPerAn? Link

They are both very good for testing.

I hope you will come back with a positive impression!! Wish you luck!

  • Yay!

    My LaCie is here! :D

    First impression are good.
This thing looks damn good on my desk and has a nice stand :) Pivots, swivels, tilts and height adjusts. Me likey. It has quite sturdy feel to it, heavy for a lcd and I like it that way. Not that I would have much experience of lcds (this is my first).

Controls are well labeled and easy to use and so is OSD and its preset settings. And the panel, ah, very nice indeed. Picture is very clear and sharp and has all the colors I could need. Viewing angles are wide. I do see some color shifting/lessening of contrast at when looking from rather large angles. I couldn't cope with any smaller viewing angles. TN panel would have been impossible.

Looking at it from normal distance I see no dead pixels. But I don't really know how visible a dead pixel is (?). When I make the a 100% white image and put it full screen and look very very closely, I can count 11+ tiny dots that either flicker a bit or are black. Dead Sub-pixels? Anyway there are no problem.

Pivot works fine an so does included Pivot Pro software.

    But some problems show..
Button for Auto configuring the screen gives only a OSD message "digital video input no access". And I do have this connected with DVI-D cable.

Also they were no drivers of any type on the cd's and there is no downloadable drivers for photon19vision on LaCie website. I now have set up as "Plug and Play monitor". Windows doesn't regonize it as anything else.

I wrote LaCie support of my problems. But the main thing is that it works beautifully and I do like it so far. Bigger review (including PixPerAn) will come when I get my new computer. By the end of this month I hope.

  • 1. Problem: hmm got to look up at the web for it

    2. that is no problem. Don´t care about that!

Maybe it is dust on the surface? Sometimes dust any real defect pixels looks the same.

Anyway searching for dead pixels needs displaying not only white, also black, red, green and blue. Pixels, which constantly shows everytime the same colour are full dead pixels. If they shine only in some of it and not all, that it's a dead sub-pixel.
But anyhow, if it they not bother you, maybe it is better not to search something for. :D

Usually you don't need any monitor driver. It does not make anything better any it will not solve your problem.
I assume, that the DVI port of you grafic board is not activated. To do that, you have to go in th setup of you grafic card driver and activate the digital output. After reboot the LaCie should react on the DVI connection.

Also consider to output digital DVI only at 60Hz. TFTs don't need higehr frequencies.
Also some TFTs can be disturbed by conecting both the analog DSUB and digital DVI at the same time. But usually only TFTs can be affected by this, if they don't offer a switch button between both inputs or a similar option in the OSD.

    I hope, I could help you a little. ;)

  • Hiya Weideblitz
    ..and thanks.

Yes, those dead pixels don't bother me. I can't see them unless I bring my face close to the panel and scan it step by step. Then, while changing background between R/G/B and white and black, I can find some colored pixels but zero truly dead. No problem.

About the lack of drivers.. yes, it doesn't seem to be no problem.. just like you and Totamec said. It works just fine as a plug and play monitor.

    That other problem
"Button for Auto configuring the screen gives only a OSD message Digital video input no access"

What you said makes sense - maybe DVI port on my graphics card is not activated. But I can't find a way to activate it. There's no separate setup for my graphics driver. I'm using Nvidia driver version 66.93 (WHQL). My card is GF4400 Ti. I have checked pretty much all options these drivers offer for the desktop, but can't find anything related to DVI. I checked DirectX diagnostics as well and Bios too just to be sure. Nothing.

But then again in two weeks I should have all parts of my new computer here, and perhaps this problem doesn't come up with a newer graphics card (GF6600 GT PCI-E). I will find out once it is set up and (hopefully) working.

Thank you for your reply and advice.

EDIT: Oh and like I mentioned earlier in this thread, I have asked LaCie tech support about these things.. still waiting for an answer.

  • Hello folks. Just a minor update to this thread..

Only "real" problem with my LaCie photon19vision is this: the auto adjust not working and giving OSD message like "Digital video input no access". Of course I can still use the 6 available presets and the make my own setting.

About a week ago LaCie tehc support replied me.
They had no solution, not yet. They did ask if the cable was working ok and "Has the video signal from the videocard has switched to DVI interface?" So Weideblitz they are wondering the same as you did. But what I told you I told them: I don't know how the switch to/enable DVI-interface on my graphics card.

Tech support was also ready to replace my screen because I appeared to have 11 dead pixels. Actually I found out I have none. Just dust and maybe, just maybe, one color-shifting sub pixel. So no problems.

I'm still waiting to test my LaCie with a new computer. Maybe that DVI strangeness disappears. Also I will do a review for you guys once I get that new comp set up. But I'm still waiting for the motherboard (A8N-SLI). It was supposed to come over a month ago but the import company just keeps giving empty promises, wrong dates.
But eventually a LaCIe review will come.

    Happy days to you all!

  • I found the problem - called the german lacie service. They told me, that you might have one of the old series with this typical problem. The german service team said to me, that it isn´t a big problem and if you don´t have pixelerrors you should not return him ;)

  • Hey thanks Totamec!
You really went a long way just to help me. Good thing german lacie service could say what it is about. I don't know if their Finnish service would have known that. I didn't call them, only emailed. And for some reason I got reply's from the Swedish service and man they were slow replying. Your call cleared this thing up. So thanks again.

Hmm, old series. I would of course like to have the latest thing having paid for this and all, but since I have no pixel errors I guess I'm doing just fine. I mean if I would insist and get a replacement panel from the new series, there is no certainty that the new one would be dead pixel free. That DVI problem is so very small and otherwise the monitor just kicks ass.. so I'm ok with this ;)

    Review coming up.. eventually.

  • No problem!

We want the review, so delete your eventually.

The new versions has only a different electronics, so don´t care ;)

  • I've been reading for this thread for a while and ended up ordering an Iiyama E481S-B from germany. (I'm from Finland) Now just when I had paid for it I found this, review from Tom's that says basicly that IPS-panel's are crappy for gaming.
I'm no hardcore gamer, but I do play some fps'es and other games. So you see why I'm worried.

Otherwise thanks for terrific site and advices that you've offered.
