Choosing the right S-IPS (or possibly PVA)

  • Hei Snaques

    Another Finn, welcome!
Interesting. So Tomshardware claims IPS-panels are not so good at gaming.. Well usually I like and mostly trust what Tomshardware writes, but now I have doubts.

Of course I can't say much about the Iiyama E481S-B, I haven't tried it. But as it uses the same panel as Nec 1960nxi and my Lacie -and having read this thread you know this- I say it is just fine for gaming. My Lacie is so Iiyama should be too.

I haven't yet done any real game testing, will do some later with a new computer. But I tried Doom 3. Only way I can see any blurring/ghosting with it is to spin/turn around as fast as I can in the game. If I keep doing this I notice I slight softening in visuals. But really, it is nothing you will notice unless you start looking for it. And movies, even fast ones, don't show any afterglow. Movies and TV look beautiful and in my opinion it easily beats a CRT.

Understand I can only speak for my Lacie and of course it is just my opinion - very subjective. Still I think your Iiyama should be okay. Can you by the way tell me what you paid for it? With shipping costs, tax and all? I'm curious because the best price I could find for it here in Finland was 605 euros.

  • Well your answer sound soothing. I just hope that Tom's is wrong this time. There are just too many happy users for me to lose my good nigth sleep.

The reason I bought it was all the great reviews of prad users and VERY decent price tag. With shipping and a pixel-check included I paid 424euros for it. Not too much for what sounds like a great display!!

  • TOm´s...

I think we have over 200 reviews of ppl with the IPS panel which is in the 481 or the lacie. They are to 99% happy.

IPS panels are not crappy for games, that is pure bullshit.

TN panels are better, of course, but the difference is really small.

  • All TFT reviews on Tom's Hardware are made by a French guy who also publishes his tests on www.hardware.fr and www.behardware.com. In every review I have seen him claim that MVA/PVA is suitable for games and IPS is not.

For what it's worth, I have two NECs 1960NXI and have had the chance to put them next to an Eizo L768. Color-wise, I preferred the NEC with its IPS-panel over the Eizo's PVA panel - the S-IPS panel has slightly more natural colors IMO, only the black is better on the PVA panel; and color/gamma shift with varying viewing angles was less on the S-IPS panel than on the PVA panel. What was extremely noticeable though was ghosting during scrolling on the Eizo's PVA panel; the S-IPS panel on the NEC is much better in this respect. I'm sure that this also applies to games (I'm not a gamer though) - so that the S-IPS panel shows much less ghosting in games than the PVA panel.

  • Just gotta say this. As I mentioned I ordered E481S from germany. Now it finally arrived. After all those praises from you guys, the display is somewhat dissapointing. The black is far from black(no suprise), backlight leaks a bit from upper edge, one dead pixel and worst of all it is not as fast as I've been told. In most fps'es the streaking is obvious when turning. You don't have to turn 360 as fast as possible to see it, normal moving shows that effect. I don't consider myself picky at all, but if this is supposed to be one of the better monitor in my price range I think I will wait for a while before trying LCD's the next time.

It's not just that bad though. The picture is sharp, I like the colors and it's fast enough for most use. I just had so high expectetions, after all the monitor is recommended for players in the What-To-Buy Guide. I know it says that none of them is perfect, but still.

So there's no new IPS panel around the corner? Are PVA panels getting fast enough?

    Helvetin harmillista, sori.

I'm sorry to read your Iiyama didn't stand up to your expectations. I thought it would. Like I told you with my screen the ghosting is there, but only if I start looking for it. I did expect your Iiyama perform like my LaCie. Maybe it is so very subjective, maybe I just don't see it. Anyway I'm sorry you didn't get what you wanted.

I didn't know E481S was recommended for players. Suprising. For gamers I would recommend only TN panels. And S-IPS for those that want multi-purpose and are picky about the colors.. like me.

    EVERYBODY FOLLOWING THIS THREAD
Just an hour ago I got email informing that my new motherboard is on it's way. So, if my computer build goes well and that machine awakens, works and stays stable, I can give you a LaCie review. In a week I hope.

  • Now that I'm getting over the first shock, the dissapointment is slowly fading away. It's not any faster though, but the picture is great. I've seen some TN panels and wouldn't want to turn to them. I guess I'll learn to live with that ghosting. I could return it, but I gues there's really nothing better for me at the moment.

PS. I still wouldn't recommend this for games or dark movies though.

PSS. I don't even necesserily think that people here had wrong opinions. I'm just starting to understand what they mean by fairly recognizible ghosting.

  • Hi all :) Noob here ;)

  • Yes! Finally it is done. See my Lacie review in the English review section.

Little over a week ago I got my last computer parts. Some days after all was running and a bit overclocked as well. Tested some Half-life 2. Soon after that I got a digicam for a loan from a friend. And some days after that he remembered to give me the cable to connect it with. And now, finally, a day after that I have the review for you.

This is my little thank you to you guys for helping me out :D
