Backlight with Eizo s1931 + misc questions

    First I apologize for not speaking german.


    I received a new eizo s1931 one week ago and I noticed some backlight but being new to LCD I don't know if it should be considered acceptable or if I should ask for a replacement monitor.


    In daylight one can notice that the corners are a little brighter when a monochrome picture is displayed, but one has to pay a particular attention and it is only in a very small area around the corners. However when looking at the black screen when the room is dark, it is very noticeable. All 4 corners and to a lesser extent the 4 edges are brighter than the rest of the screen.


    What do you think ?


    Other than that I find that the screen is quite bright even when the brightness regulator function is disabled and the screen is set at the lowest level (0%).


    My eyes become painful quickly but I suspect that this might me caused by the fonts rather than by the brightness. I'm using this monitor with a mac intosh (it's the first time I ever use a Mac) and the characters all seem a bit fuzzy (at least not very sharp) compared to that of windows. Did any of you ever encounter the same problem with a macintosh (under mac os X) ? And yes it is set at the good resolution (and the good frequency too since it is digitally connected to the screen) and I tried different options for the fonts rendering but it doesn't change anything...

    Could you take close-up pictures of both the brightness uniformity (in a dark room with the monitor displaying a black picture) and the font problem and then post them here?

    Mac OS X does smoothen the text by default (anti-aliasing). I know no way to disable it completely, yet. But, you can disable smoothing for small fonts in the system preferences. I don't know the english option, in the German version it is called "Erscheinungsbild" - the third icon.
    I purchased my first mac recently, too. And I don't like the way of font-smoothing either. :(


    I searched the net for this problem, and found TinkerTool. With this tool, you can disable font smoothing by setting the limit higher than any font will be. :)

    Regarding the fonts this could well be a matter of smoothing plus the fact that I had never used a LCD before (I now have a LCD with windows at my workplace and it gives me the same impression) but I don't think there is any real problem.


    About the backlight it's quite difficult to capture it on a photograph, especially on a black screen. I have attached a few pictures that I think give a good idea although it definitely looks worse on the photographs that when one looks directly at the monitor.

    Sorry, I posted several times the same pictures... As you can see there are only four different pictures.

    I must admit I do have seen worse backlight bleeding than this. However, since Eizo's customer service is known for being very fair on such matters, I'd recommend emailing these pictures to your local Eizo support contact. They just might exchange it for you on-site.


    As to brightness:
    If your screen is still too bright at 0% setting, you can further reduce brightness by toning down each of the three RGB color channels red, green and blue by the same amount.
