NEC LCD1990SX or LCD1990SXI

  • I'm sorry to write in English, feel free to anwser in German.

I have to TFT's on my shortlist, the LCD1990SXI and the LCD1990SX.

    The main differences are:
1990SX: PVA panel, 1500:1 contrast ratio and a brightness of 250 cd.
    1990SXI: S-IPS panel, 600:1 contrast ratio and a brightness of 270 cd.

Both have a 12 bit LUT and the rest of the features is allmost the same.

I will primarily use it for photography work. Which screen will be the best for me to buy? The price is allmost the same.

I would prefer the SX model, because the IPS panel in the SXI version has a really strong glossy crystal surface effect. It is not the same like a glossy panel and the panel mirrored nothing ;) But it was the reason for me not to buy the SXi model. The technical features are superb and in combination with the PVA Panel the NEC LCD1990SX is a perfect 19 inch LCD monitor.

No sorry, but I think it's perhaps the Panel from the LCD1990FXp. Here is our review:

  • hmm when I look at that review then the PVA panel is not nearly as good, especially the uniformity of the backlight is not very good when compared to IPS panel.

  • Do you have the opportunity to look at the monitors before buying one? You seem to have a pretty clear idea of what you want (and don't want), so the best approach is probably to actually "sample" the LCDs. If in doubt, I would go with Andi's suggestion since he's seen both of them. If all else fails, you can probably send or take it back to the vendor (not sure about the legal situation in the Netherlands, but at least over here in Germany you can return anything that you have bought per mail order within two weeks -- without having to even provide a reason, and the vendor must cover the shipping costs as well; you may have similar regulations). This would also take care of the issue that the backlightning of monitors can widely vary between models of even the same series. Not every monitor's backlightning is equally homogeneous.
