Viewsonic VP181B - First Impressions
As there has already been 3 reviews posted here on Prad.de, this review will probably not be like those. I can only agree with what the 3 reviews are saying and try to resume and add some positive and negative things about the TFT.
The monitor itself:
Simply perfekt in terms of design and material. The way you can turn and adjust the TFT simply confirms that its top materials and its VERY stable. I was especially surprised by the Pivot function, how easy it was to turn the display 90 degrees and how it almost automatically got put to place, making it horisontally 100% correct. I simply looove the fact that the VP181B can turn 45 degrees both left and right. I havent really used the height-installer yet but it seems stable as well.
The OSD:
Theres 5 buttons on the VP181B, one of which is the power-on button. The 4 others are labeled as "1" - "arrow up" - "arrow down" and "2". "1" is used to access the OSD. "2" is used to switch between multiple monitors (D-SUB, DVD-A/DVD-I) and the arrows...well used for scrolling, what else The OSD in general is very user-friendly. Its easy to adjust the contrast and brightness - i could have wished for a valueamount (example: Contrast 78 and Brightness 35) but theres only a slider, no problem tho. The rest of the OSD contains the usual options. My VP181B has all the Interpolation features too, and they're working perfectly.
The image quality:
As this is my first TFT and my last CRT monitor was a 5 year-old Goldstar 17" - ANY monitor really would impress me lots. And the same with the Viewsonic VP181B - the image quality is simply perfect. White is really white and the colors themselves are 100% true - and all of this goes to the ENTIRE screen area, even in the corners. The angle-problem which wasnt really described in the other reviews, but as TFTshop.net found out - is unfortunately there. Meaning that its only visible at night in a dark room, trying to watch a dark DVD. Its not a big problem though, not for me anyways.
Pixel errors:
Unfortunately, i found 4 full Pixelerrors on my VP181B. But strangely enough, they're not noticable at all - only when i really try looking for them. And sometimes i even manage to find only 2. I tested it with the TFT-test.exe and all 4 pixels were visible on all the colorscreens (white, blue, green, red) except the black one - meaning that all 4 pixelerrors are dark ones, which makes it bearable. As of now, I have no plans of switching it at the store. Before buying it, i was pretty sure that pixelerrors would annoy me very much - but im amazed to find out they dont annoy me at all. Luckily they're all located close to the edge of the TFT so maybe thats why
The gaming experience:
So far Ive only been able to test the monitor shortly with 3 games.
Battlefield 1942: I see NO blurring at all - perfectly playable and with those colors...wow!
Counterstrike: I'm not really a CS-gamer but the VP181B plays CS greeeat! First i tried in 1024x768 and my mate, who is an experienced CS-gamer, stood beside me saying "theres juust a bit blurring when i look at the huge boxes in cs". Myself...i couldnt really see it, i was running around shooting all over perfectly with no blurs at all. When i changed the resolution to 1280x960 - wow the gfx got even better and now my mate said that he couldnt see any blurring at all - niiiiice
Tiger Woods 2003: A game that not many tests - its very playable and since you can specify in many details how the graphics should be in this game, i had to adjust a bit but then it runs just fine.
The final notes:
In general, im extremely satisfied with the Viewsonic VP181B. Here are the pros and cons to sum it up
Pro:
- Perfect image quality

- Heigh adjustable
- Can turn 45 degrees to both sides
- Pivot function works great and smooth
