Best 19" LCD for gaming

  • Which 19" LCD would be best for gaming? I don't know if the buyers guide is up to date or not, but I'm considering LG L1970HR (TN, 2ms) or Philips 190P7ES (P-MVA, 8ms). Any other LCD worth the thought?

Sorry for the english topic, but I am not very fluent in German : (

Welches 19 " LCD würde für gaming am besten sein?

Ich bin nich sicher oder das Kaufberatung seite up to date ist, aber Ich
habe diese LCDs geschaut: LG L1970HR (TN, 2ms) or Philips 190P7ES (P-MVA, 8ms)

Welcher is besser? Ist irgendein anderer LCD wert den Gedanken?

  • Welcome to the forum =)

I would recommend the L1970HR because two people have tested the 190P7ES and had a few problems with ghosting.

If you want to have a VA panel based monitor you should take a look at BenQ's FP91GP. It's a MVA panel monitor with overdrive and 8ms grey-to-grey.

A lot of people from this forum have written down their experiences with this monitor right here.

  • What about the new LG screens L1900E/L1900J/L1900R

What is the difference between them and the 1970HR?
There new monitors seem to support HDCP...is there any
reason to choose these over the 1970HR?

Also, how come that all recommended LCDs for gaming are
with TN panels? Arent PVA panels generally better?

Also, how come that all recommended LCDs for gaming are
with TN panels? Arent PVA panels generally better?

    because..
    1. TN panels are somewhat faster than PVA+overdrive panels
    2. TN panels are cheaper to manufacture, thus allowing for affordable monitor pricing, which in turn makes for easier marketing among the (less solvent) target group of (mostly young) gamers.

IMO, comparing TN with PVA+overdrive, the speed advantage that one gets from TN monitors is out of all proportions to the image quality sacrifice that one has to put up with.
However, when asking hardcore gamers about this, they take an entirely different view on this, and rightly so (because it's valid on their terms).

  • Meaning, hardcore games would go for the PVA+Odr. panels, right?

Well, now I'm seriously considering the Samsung 940Fn monitor
M-PVA panel + Overdrive, 8ms response time...so it would be
a good monitor to las a few years.

  • sorry, it appears I didn't put that quite clear enough. it must have come across as if hc gamers are likely to 'change your view' or something like that. (?)
but no, that's not the case.
by "entirely different view" I mean that hardcore gamers have a different (opposite) opinion than, for example, I do.
Meaning they mostly prefer TN panels because, to them, getting that slight edge on speed is worth the quality loss.

  • I see. Well I am not exactly a HC gamer...in a sense I play mostly FRP
games (like Oblivion, ...Neverwinter Nights 2 and Gothic 3 are on the top
of my waiting list ...but I do enjoy FEAR, Far Cry and similar).

So speed is not all that critical for me...not if it is sacrificed by image
quality ...so in your opinion would the 940Fn be suitable for me? I
also had my eyes on the LG 1970HR with TN panel ...but it seems
mostly PVA/MVA panels are recommended by prad.de gurus.

  • Yes, I'm avare of the brightness uniformity problem...but according to
the guy I talked few days ago (he tested the 940Fn, but I forgot his
name :() it is really noticable only on the dark screen ..hopefully I can
    check this out today.

Any other suggestion for a gaming 19" LCD?

  • On the other hand, the L1970HR is probably the best example of how far some TN panels have evolved in the meantime. Definitely great value considering it's a TN monitor.

To help you most effectively, we need more information: how to ask...

Preferences: hight adjustment (but this is not all that important)

  • 19 inch: (1000:1 contrast)
    BenQ FP91GP
    Acer Office Line AL1922As
    Acer Office Line AL1923s
    Belinea 101915 (111921)
    Belinea 101920 (111919)
    Sony SDM-S95FS
    Samsung SyncMaster 913TM

    19 inch: (1300:1 contrast)
    Acer Performance Line AL1952
    Belinea 1980

    19 inch: (1500:1 contrast)
    Sony SDM-X95FB / SDM-X95FS

  • Hi, I would add Philips 190P7ES (1300:1 contrats). Although some empiric reports seems to point inferior game performances than other all round VA monitors.

Taking into account my budget (up 400€) I’m considering Belinea 101920. It have same P-MVA panel than FP91GP and VP930, and in addition is height adjustable and pivotable. But I lately noted there is not much interest in current version of Belinea 101920 (ref 111919)… in 19" VA-TFT all round monitor discussions, and I don’t know why… So it makes me be hesitated.
Theoretically Belinea 101920 is a la par in performances than FP91GP and VP930...

On the other hand speaking about famous backlight defect. It seems to me it is present in all models. But I haven’t known to find out which of the two o three models I’m personally evaluating (Belinea, Benq and Viewsonic), suffer less from it.

Thanks to your post tetsuo I have news of a new 19" TFT Belinea with P-MVA panel: 1980S1... It will be interesting in the futur to know if it is a real performances advance regarding Belinea 101920. Or it’s only a cosmetically retouch.

  • Disappointed to say but I have just returned a Belinea 1980 S1. Ghosting and blurring were too much for me when making fast movements using TrackIR.
Very nice looking panel but not suited to fast gaming IMHO.
