Moving to Germany

  • Hello everybody.

Sorry for posting in english, but my german is not yet good enough to write this. :D

I'm going to be studying at Universität Passau, so I'm moving in a few days.

I have a couple of questions:

    1) Where to buy hardware and the such, offline and online? Especially the BenQ 24". Search sites and big stores. It's kinda hard without this stuff.

    2) Are there customs for products coming to Germany from other countries, through mail?

    3) Are MAC stores everywhere? I'll need a MBP right away.

    Thanks in advance ;)

  • I would have advised you to stay as far away as possible, but seems to be a bit to late for that!

Well never buy hardware or anything in a store here, most of the time it is to expensive!

Always buy online, check for best price at (yes its for german too!)

Last but not least, try to stay alive and visit the Oktoberfest!
Just tell anyone you meet that you are here to visit Oktoberfest and they will be very friendly from the beginning!

  • First of all: Welcome to Germany!

    1) For TFTs you should have a look at

There are several big serious online-shops in Germany where you can buy your hardware like , , or . These ones are in my opinion some examples of good shops and there are many more.

You can check the prices at as written above.
But make shure about the critics of the shops. Mostly the cheapest shops are not very reliable and there are often comments about fraud.

    2) I don´t fully understand this question. Do you mean customs for electricity? What do you mean with "trough mail"?

    3) MAC-Shops are in Germany not as common as in other countries. You have to search for it at google.de. Mostly these shops will be in bigger towns.

  • Hey,

Thanks a lot for the replies :)

Panelmania, may I ask why you would've advised me to stay away from Germany? :P

Mario, what I meant was, when you order products from abroad, do they go through customs and are subject to taxes?

    Greetings,
    Tarso

  • Hi,

yes, they are subject to taxes. The only way to prevent this would be if it could be delivered to you without an invoice as a gift. But I wouldn´t risk it.

  • Welcome to Germany !!

Please don't take Panelmania too serious - he just tried to give you a taste of
    "german humor".
But it's true online-shops are usually cheaper than offline-shops, especially the
big ones (which are Media Markt and Saturn). But there are small offline shops
too, which are very close to online-prices.

I wish you success and a very good time in Germany.

  • it is sort of a very uncommon thing to have a mac in uni, but if you have one you're pretty much sticking out of the crowd... just don't try to be too individualistic in germany, okay? ;)

by the way, what are you going to study in passau?

  • ollux: Uncommon thing?? What are you studying? Take a look at some design course of studies, theres pc a foreign word. And concerning individualism I've got quite another opinion, too ;)

    But BTT :D

  • I'm studying Medien und Kommunikation at Universität Passau.

I have been to Germany before, and out of the places I've visited in Europe it's my favorite this side of Holland. That's why I decided to go on exchange there. Passau is a very nice city also, I've been there before as well.

Thanks for all the replies, I already think german people are cool, haha ;)

  • Hello again!

If, for example, I ordered a Playstation 3 from the US, how much % would I pay in taxes when it reached Germany?

    Thanks!
