REVIEW: Eizo SX3031W-BK Part 2

The Samsung XL30 and Eizo CG301W are aimed at professional users. Whilst the former uses an LED backlight, the CG301W is very similar to the model we have tested, but also offers hardware calibration.

In comparison with the rival models from Samsung and HP, the Eizo SX3031W is more than twice as expensive. There is also a large price difference between the Eizo model and the Dell 3008WFP, which also offers a considerably wider range of connectors. In our test, we examine whether the considerably higher price of the SX3031W is justified by corresponding performance.

All results for the test were obtained on the digital input of an Asus 8800GTX.

Scope of supply

The Eizo SX3031W comes in an astonishingly compact package which performs its protective function flawlessly. Compared to the box in which Apple delivers its 30 inch Cinema Display, you can hardly believe that you have received a 30-inch LCD.

As well as the monitor itself, the box contains the usual additional contents from Eizo: a multi-lingual getting started guide, information on the terms of the guarantee, power cable, two DVI-D cables (SingleLink and DualLink) and a USB cable which is used for communication with the computer.

A detailed guide, an ICC profile and the well-known ScreenManager Pro software are included on a CD. This software is used for adjusting the most important settings comfortably on the computer without having to use the monitor’s OSD.

Design and mechanics

The Eizo SX3031W is very simple in appearance. The plastic exterior is very well made and gaps are extremely small. The quality should be good enough for all professional users. However, the model also cuts a good figure in the home and deviates pleasantly from the current trend towards piano lacquer finishes.

Beauty can be this simple – such simplicity can be beautiful: the Eizo SX3031W.

The matte frame is comparatively narrow with a width of 2.4 cm; nothing distracts your glance from the actual screen, which is also matte. Thanks to its heavy base, the entire screen stands very stably on the desktop. The well-designed buttons are also firmly anchored.

The Eizo logo can be seen in the lower left corner and the serial number, on a printed transparent sticky strip, can be seen in the top right corner.

At the comparatively small working distance that will arise because of the high pixel density and because of the large screen size, adjustment of the monitor takes on an important role. The base allows height adjustment of 12 cm.

The screen can be tilted up to 30 degrees backwards. When turning around the horizontal axis, the maximum angle is 35 degrees left and right. The lowest position reduces the distance between the lower edge of the frame and the table surface to 4 cm. In the highest position, this distance is 13 cm.
