REVIEW: Eizo SX3031W-BK Part 6

Image quality

The Samsung S-PVA-Panel in the monitor provides a subjectively very good image quality. Colours are vivid, homogeneity and illumination are excellent at first glance. The WCG CCFL backlight means that green and red tones in particular look very intense before calibration. The black value is more than convincing for an LCD model with a static backlight. It is in this regard that the model demonstrates a visible advantage with regard to S-IPS panel monitors.

According to Eizo, the maximum contrast for the SX3031W is 900:1 an. In its factory settings, we measured a lower but absolutely acceptable value of 759:1. After calibration, the contrast was 689:1.

Eizo has advertised the maximum brightness as 260 cd/m². At 100% brightness, we measured a value of 224 cd/m². It is hardly possible to work properly at this level of panel brightness, both in normal or dark surroundings, so the brightness will have to be reduced considerably.

Therefore, the result when the brightness is reduced to 0% is of particular interest. Here, we measured 76 cd/m², a very good value, since it was achieved without reducing the colour channels. For normal use, we recommend brightness of 140 cd/m². This measurement is achieved at 44 % brightness. Thus, the Eizo SX3031W has sufficient brightness reserves, even for long-term use.

We measured the brightness distribution at 15 points on the screen.

The maximum brightness deviation from the upper and lower edges of the screen is about seven percent. The average deviation is three percent. This is very good and is due to the DUE (Digital Uniformity Equalizer), which ensures better homogeneity, since Eizo has stopped using direct backlights in its current models.

The gamma value is a stable 2,2 for almost two thirds of the panel (from the left edge). In the remaining third of the screen, the gamma value is 2,3, but we do not see this as a problem.

The maximum viewing angle is 178 degrees, which is typical for an S-PVA panel. Despite this value, a current S-PVA monitor has a slight disadvantage as compared with S-IPS models in that the colours pale more quickly.

However, the viewing angles are absolutely sufficient for most situations and only minimal differences can be seen at the sides when the screen is viewed from the front. Even at extreme viewing angles, no colour errors can be seen.
