REVIEW: Samsung P2450H Part 5

Setup & Reset menu

In the Setup & Reset menu, we find additional settings for the OSD and the illumination of the buttons as well as language, Reset and Source (auto/manual).

Most of these functions can also be controlled using the mouse with the MagicTune Premium program (on the CD).

Software

The CD contains the aforementioned MagicTune and MultiScreen, which divides the monitor into definable fields and can therefore create a better overview. The relevant program is dragged onto the required field and the size is automatically adjusted. However, unfortunately this does not work with every program.

Multi-screen should improve work with the Samsung P2450H.

In addition, a large sticker stating "Compatible with Windows 7“ appears on the new monitor. According to the manufacturer, the logo guarantees that this product can be used to an unlimited extent with Microsoft’s new Windows 7 operating system.

The following criteria are fulfilled by Windows 7-compatible hardware:

- Successful passing of the "Microsoft designed" test for reliability on computers

- Easy installation and automatic driver updates via Windows Update

- Worry-free installation – simply connect and use

- Compatible with the 64-Bit version

Image quality

The maximum brightness is about 330 cd/m2 in the factory setting of 100 percent and can be reduced in steps of 1 percent to 41 cd/m2. In order to achieve a value of 120 cd/m2, it was necessary to reduce the level to 35 and for a value of 140 cd/m2, we selected brightness level 41. This area is suitable for long term work and graphics applications in order to avoid burning eyes or headaches.

After the calibration, a value of around 80 is ideal for contrast according to Eye-One Match software and this is also in the area of the test image evaluation. Values of more than 80 drown the brightest and darkest colours, with blue performing somewhat less well. When the model is uncalibrated, a value of 70 is better.

The dynamic contrast value of 70.000:1 is a value measured by the manufacturer that reflects the contrast ratio for two subsequent frames. We were unable to verify this value in our test. The display does not have an extended colour space, but this is not really a disadvantage, since normally, the sRGB colour space is displayed more precisely and the deltaE deviations are lower.

The gamma cannot be defined precisely to the number – instead, only pre-defined modes are indicated. Unfortunately, the gamma value is changed if other settings are adjusted, e.g. brightness and contrast. In Mode 1, the gamma is around 2.28 in the factory settings, in Mode 2, it is about 2,07 and in Mode 3, it is about 2,42. We recommend the use of Mode 1, since it is the closest to the target gamma of 2,2.

Brightness distribution

In several forums, there are reports of "backlight bleeding" on the Samsung P2450H, but the backlight is subject to a certain degree of variation within a series and the result for individual monitors within a series can vary accordingly.

With a value of 140 cd/m2 in the middle, the following values were measured:

136 141 141 140 138
124 134 140 139 135
123 118 130 126 127

In the upper area, the deviation is lower and deviations of up to 20 % are possible in the middle and on the left and right. The illumination is cloudy, but there are no extreme light patches.

Illumination in darkened room with a black screen.
