REVIEW: Samsung S27A850D
With the S27A850D LED, Samsung is introducing a Series 8 premium business monitor for users with high expectations. The 27- monitor is equipped with a PSD (Plane to Line Switching) panel developed by Samsung which is reported to allow for a high resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and full sRGB colour space coverage of 100 percent. Thus, as well as a higher level of viewing angle stability and better detail, Samsung is also promising perfect colours and natural looking images.
The Samsung S27A850D LED is also up for a challenge when it comes to connector options: as well as a DisplayPort and two DVI-D connectors, the monitor is equipped with an audio input and a USB 3.0 hub, which ensures fast data transfer. Height adjustment, pivot and swivel functions make the monitor ergonomically flexible.
With the model’s integrated Eco motion and light sensors, Samsung aims to save you power and time. The Picture in Picture function, with which screen content from two computers can be viewed simultaneously on the monitor, is also a practical feature. All this sounds very promising and we will examine it closely in our test.
The monitor is delivered in a slim, simply labelled box with two handle openings and weighs around 9.6 kg, allowing it to be transported with ease. Without the packaging, the 27-inch monitor weighs just 6.6 kg. As well as a power cable and a Dual-Link DVI-D cable, the S27A850D LED also comes with a USB 3.0 cable for connecting the USB hub to a PC.
The power unit, which has an on/off button, is packed separately to the monitor, as is the large base plate. The optimal resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels is only available if a Dual-Link DVI-D 24+1 pin cable or a DisplayPort cable is used. The DisplayPort and audio cables are not included and must be bought separately if required.
Guarantee conditions, power unit, base plate and accessories.
Samsung has included a manufacturer’s guarantee of 2 years, detailed in various languages on the papers and guarantee cards included with the monitor. Proof of the model’s TCO 5.0 certification is also included, along with information on professional disposal of the monitor in the EU as electrical waste.
Finally, the scope of supply includes a Getting Started Guide in the form of a folding leaflet in 18 languages and a CD containing a detailed manual in 35 languages and a monitor driver for adjusting the monitor’s resolution and frequency as well as software for using the screen’s Auto-Pivot function. The latest version of the CD content can also be obtained from the manufacturer’s website.
The S27A850D LED is resplendent in matte black and is designed for business use. Only the Samsung labelling stands out in chrome, on the lower edge of the frame. The model type (SyncMaster SA850) is indicated discreetly on the top left hand edge of the frame. A sticker indicating the model’s TCO 5.0 and Energy-Star certification can be seen on the bottom left.
The broad base promises that the monitor will stand extremely securely on the desk surface, with no need for concern even when the height is being adjusted or the screen is being turned. The screen, with its LED backlight, is slim and also suitable for wall mounting. Small, discreet ventilation slots are located on the middle section of the back of the monitor and also on the bottom of the frame. These are absolutely sufficient for the PLS panel with LED backlight and with no integrated power unit.
The exterior of the Samsung S27A850D looks sturdy and the quality is generally very good. Only the space between the screen and the frame is not quite even and bulges slightly, so dirt and dust may slip inside. The frame is very narrow, measuring just 19 millimetres at the sides. The lower frame is somewhat broader, at 30 mm, and its lines are slightly rounded, lending the monitor a certain elegance in addition to its simplicity.
The broad base plate is slotted into the pillar-formed stand of the monitor and fixed quickly and securely in place with the integrated screw. Connected cables can be fixed in place using a plastic clamp located on the support arm and organised neatly behind the arm. The Samsung cable bands can also be used to tidy the cables and present an easy alternative to cable ties. This emphasises the slim, straight lined design of the monitor in practice.

Practical and functional: the back of the Samsung S27A850D.
The back of the S27A850D is practical and functional. If the support arm is removed, the screw holes for VESA- wall mounts can be used. If the user does not wish to attach the monitor to a wall mount, the power unit can be fitted into its slot at the back of the monitor, above the support arm.
