Foreword

This test was carried out in co-operation with the Croation website HDTV.com.hr. For this reason, the texts are in Croatian in the pictures, especially those of the menu settings. In addition, the explanations in the videos prepared are also in Croatian.

Introduction

As a representative of Philips’ new 8000 series today we want to take a close look at the 42PFL8404H HDTV LCD. The device is equipped with MPEG-4 DVB-T/C tuners, which will allow watching standard and high definition program, along with cable TV, without the need to own a separate STB component.

To watch cable TV you will need to use the Common Interface (CI) on the side of the TV, in which one has to insert a CAM module and a smartcard from the cable provider. Now watching can start!

Along with this capability, the new series also offers NetTV feature, which gives you direct access to the internet and it’s vast selection of services without the need to use your computer. An USB port with support for different video and audio formats seems like a sweet topping on the cake – now, is it really all this great? Results of our testing are to be read hereafter.

Scope of supply

The panel comes in a carton box that measures 1.203 x 266 x 682 mm. Inscriptions and layout are both typical for Philips. Packaging clearly points out that it is an LCD TV we are dealing with, with 107 cm diagonal screen size and that it belongs to the 8000 series.

This model’s credo, if you like, is "Enjoy a movie night in with Ambilight", the technology about which we will talk more later on. Complete package weighs about 24 kg, and the instructions on how to extract the contents are listed on top of the box.
