Overall, we rate the video and film playback quality of the Dell E228WFP as 'good'. In terms of pixel response time and colour brilliance, the Dell is at a very high level. The perfect playback of HD material is particularly impressive - at least here, the not-quite-black bands cannot really spoil the overall visual playback experience.
The Dell E228WFP is a solid and successful piece of LCD technology. The monitor boasts a very fast response time without the need for overdrive technology, which means that irritating side-effects such as ghosting or lags are prevented from the start. Thus, the monitor is predestined for hardcore gaming.
The interpolation in games and films is also particularly good. We were also extremely pleased with the interpolated image reproduction of the E228WFP on the XBox 360. Although the console can only be used on the analogue input of the monitor, the quality of the reproducible image can be deemed spectacular. The E228WFP suffers only because of the limited viewing angles and the brightness distribution, which is not ideal. However, these are the limitations one has to expect when using a TN monitor, and users of TN technology must simply learn to live with them.
The flawless quality of the cover reassures the user straight away and the simple, linear design of the E228WFP will certainly find fans quickly. However, we found the ergonomic features insufficient. Apart from the tilting function, the monitor cannot be adjusted in any other way. However, the Dell E228WFP cannot be made a scapegoat in this respect, since even recently, we had reason to criticise a whole range of different 22" widescreens for their poor ergonomic features.
The Dell E228WFP is available already at a price of around €370 and for this price, the user gets not only a large screen format, but also a monitor that covers a large part of the multimedia application spectrum on account of its abilities. This LCD will win many hearts, especially amongst hardcore gamers.
