REVIEW: Dell U2412M
++ sehr gut, + gut, +/- zufriedenstellend, - schlecht, -- sehr schlecht
UltraSharp U2412M - this is the designation for the new 24-inch representative of DELL’s long established business series, which has recently undergone an update by the manufacturer. The displays of this family are characterised by their consistent focus on office use: 16:10 aspect ratio instead of 16:9, DisplayPort instead of HDMI and solid mechanical features instead of high gloss design.
The new representative of this series, U2412M, provides a 24-inch viewing angle-stable E-IPS panel at 1.920 to 1.200 (16:10) that is illuminated by energy-saving LEDs. Other key figures sound interesting, as well: a static contrast of 1.000:1 and a response time of eight milliseconds for a grey-to-grey change seem to be decent values for an IPS panel.
Convincing mechanical equipment provides sufficient ergonomics in the workplace, as it allows turning the monitor on its stand, tilting it, make height adjustments as well as to shift it to high size (portrait mode).
Ahead of the official market launch in Germany, we were given the opportunity to put a sample of this display through its paces during our extensive testing procedures. In the following, it remains to be seen if the monitor with its updated inner workings is able to meet the high standards of its predecessor models.
For the tests, the monitor was attached to the digital output of a GeForce 9600GT and a Radeon 4650, respectively. The measurement was carried out with the help of an X-Rite EyeOne Pro and a DTP94 sensor, controlled by the iColor software and Colorimetre HCFR. For reviewing the video capability, Sony’s BDP-S370 was used as an external player device.
Due to the rather massive, large-scale base, the box of the DELL U2412M is rather bulky for a 24-inch model. After unpacking, the display must first be mounted on the stand. However, this happens quickly and safely by simply snapping things into place; tools are not required.
Since the cavities in the packing carton are filled with large pieces of polystyrene, the monitor is safely stored and protected against scratches.
The scope of delivery is satisfying: With a VGA and a DVI cable one is prepared for both analogue and digital playback. Also, the upstream USB cable allows the immediate use of the built-in USB hub. A printed manual is not provided, but it is included on the accompanying CD.
