REVIEW: NEC EA231WMi-BK
++ very good, + good, +/- satisfactory, - bad, -- very bad
After Dell and Samsung, now NEC is also entering the market of well-priced models with high-quality panels with the EA231WMi. Like Dell, NEC has opted for an eIPS panel.
The 23-inch model should score points with consumers because of its wide viewing angles, high energy efficiency and excellent ergonomic features. Although the EA231WMi does not have a HDMI port, it can also accept HDCP-encrypted signals via the DVI input. Together with the FullHD panel, the model could be the ideal beginner monitor for film fans. The following review should clarify whether the EA231WMi can keep up with the tough competition.
All results published in the test were obtained via the digital input of an ATI graphics card of type X1950Pro in the board layout of Powercolor. For the measurements for the calibration, we used the iColor software together with the DTP94 colorimeter from Quato and the "Colorimeter HCFR" software. In order to test the video functions and the suitability of the monitor for gaming, we used the BDP-S350E Blu-ray player and the Playstation 3 from Sony, which were both connected via a HDMI-DVI cable.
The EA231WMi is delivered in a large box. As soon as the monitor is being unpacked, the reason for the size of the box becomes clear: the large base is already mounted on the monitor and therefore requires a certain amount of space. However, the content was protected as well as possible with a large quantity of Styrofoam and an anti-static sheet. With its 8,5 kg, the NEC EA231WMi is no lightweight, which gives the model a feeling of quality.
Large, but securely packed – the box of the EA231WMi.
The scope of supply also includes a DVI cable for the digital connection and a D-Sub VGA cable for the analogue connection, an external device cable for the power supply, a 3,5 mm jack cable for controlling the integrated speakers, a USB upstream cable and a plastic cover for the cable routing. As usual, NEC also includes a brief user guide in printed format and the complete manual with the software on the CD. The scope of supply does not include a DisplayPort cable.
Almost all accessories needed are provided with the EA231WMi.
